News Channel

Using the international resources of the Associated Press, the News Channel gives Wii users free access to stories in multiple categories from across the country and around the world. The News Channel features an easy-to-use interface for locating and reading news items.

Please note that a compatible internet connection is required to use the News Channel (click here if you need assistance connecting your Wii console online), and the WiiConnect24 feature must be turned on (more info).

Accessing and using the News Channel:

  1. With the Wii console properly connected online (how to), use the Wii Remote to select "News Channel" from the Wii console's main menu.
  2. If you have not yet updated your Wii console with the News Channel, you will need to select "Update" to begin the update process. If you are experiencing problems connecting online to perform the update, please click here.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


First Time Set Up:

    When accessing the News Channel for the first time, you will need to download the "update" for the News Channel, if you have not already done so.

  1. From the Wii console main menu, use the Wii Remote (player 1 only) to select the News Channel, then select Start to begin.
  2. If asked "Connect to the Internet and perform a Wii system update?", select "Yes." The download can take several minutes to complete. If you receive an error code or are otherwise unable to connect online or download the update, click here for assistance.
  3. You will be asked to verify your date and time. Selecting Yes will move you on to the next step, while selecting No will take you back to the Wii Menu where you can adjust your date/time settings.
  4. After the News Channel loads, you will be able to use it with the navigation controls of the Wii Remote.

News Sections:

    The list of available sections allows you to read news articles in a wide range of categories. With the exception of the "International" section, many of the stories within the various sections can be specific to the country selected in the Wii console's Settings menu (click here for information on this setting). News articles are typically updated several times a day, depending on the feed from the Associated Press.

     

    • National
      A list of news items related to the country you have selected in the Wii console's Settings menu (click here for information on this setting).
    • International
      Allows you to read news stories from around the world.
    • Sports
      A list of sports-related news stories.
    • Arts/Entertainment
      Arts and Entertainment stories can include movie and TV news, celebrity information, and other "entertainment"-related information.
    • Business
      News stories with a focus on the business world.
    • Science/Health
      News stories related to a wide range of science and health topics.
    • Technology
      Articles found in this section detail the latest news in technology, such as computers, the Internet, and updates to other technologies.

    Slideshow:

    Selecting the "Slideshow" option will rotate individual headlines from the various sections of the News Channel.

    • Pressing the A Button will select a story and display it for reading.
    • Pressing the "1" Button will increase the time a headline is shown, and pressing the "2" Button will decrease the time, which is indivicated by the dots at the bottom of the screen.
    • Press "+" and "-" to zoom increase or decrease the size of the text in the headline.

 

 

 

 


Using the "Globe" Feature:

    The "Globe" allows you to take control of a 3D model of the Earth and read news items from around the world.

    To access the "Globe" feature:

    1. Select any news story that features the blue "globe" icon next to it.
    2. While viewing the news story, select the "Globe" link along the bottom-right of the screen, or simply click on the map to the right of the story.

     

    Using the Globe:

    • Zoom feature:
      You can select "Zoom -" (in) or "Zoom +" (out) by using the remote to zoom in or out on the global map.
    • Newspaper Icons:
      Selecting the gray-and-white newspaper icon will display a news story that does not have a photograph within the article.
    • Photograph Icons:
      Selecting a photograph icon will display a news story that has a photograph within the article.
    • Tilt
      Selecting the tilt arrows at the bottom of the screen allow you to tilt the viewing position.
    • Back:
      This will take you back to the story you were reading prior to viewing the "Globe."
    • Free Roam
      For a custom view of the planet, press and hold the A button on any area of the planet. You can spin the planet model around by "pulling" the Wii Remote to either direction.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Navigation Controls:

The following options and controls are available in the News Channel.

 

Icons and Controls
  Standard Article :
Stories that feature this icon next to them are not associated to the "Globe" feature.
  Global Link:
Selecting a news story with a small blue disc next to it will give you access to the "Globe" feature (click here for more info).
  Directional Arrows:
When these arrows appear on screen, it is an indication that there are additional areas above or below the section you are viewing. To view these areas, place the hand cursor of the Wii Remote on the top or bottom half of the page, and press the B Button to scroll up or down.
  "A" Button of the Wii Remote (Select):
Use the A Button to click on news stories or menu navigation, to select them. You can also point at and press the A Button on the cat at the top of the News Channel's loading screen, to receive tips on using the News Channel.
  Plus Button of the Wii Remote (Zoom In):
Press the "+" on the Wii Remote to zoom in, which enlarges text and images, which can make them easier to view. There are several levels of zoom available. You can press and hold "+" or tap it.
  Minus Button of the Wii Remote (Zoom Out):
Press the "-" on the Wii Remote to zoom out, making the text and images smaller, but fitting more content in the viewable area. There are several levels of zoom available. You can press and hold "-" or tap it.
  "1" Button of the Wii Remote (Highlight Text):
Hold down the "1" button and move the cursor over text to highlight in red, and underline, the text. While in the "Slideshow" mode, pressing the "1" Button will increase the time that individual headlines are displayed.
  "2" Button of the Wii Remote:
While in the "Slideshow" mode, pressing the "2" Button will decrease the time that individual headlines are displayed.
