The 1977 and 1980 elections were half-Senate elections with five Senators per state. Elections since 1990 have been half Senate elections with six Senators per state. The 1983 election was a double dissolution for 10 senators from each state, while the 1987 election was a double dissolution for the expanded Senate with 12 Senators per state. The 1984 election elected seven Senators per state to produce the increase in the size of the Senate. Note that the four Territory Senators were elected at each election.
The 'Others' column includes Senator Harradine in 1980, 1983, 1987, 1993 and 1998. Nuclear Disarmament Party senators were elected from Western Australia in 1984 and 1987 and from NSW in 1987. A One Nation Senator was elected in Queensland in 1998, and a Family First Senator from Victoria in 2004. The Northern Territory's Country Liberal Senator has been included in the National Party total. Family First contested its first election in 2004 and recorded 1.8% of the national vote.
