Fortune Magazine Will Drop to 18 Issues From 25 a Year

Fortune magazine is cutting back to 18 issues next year from 25 and is being redesigned, executives at Time Inc. said on Friday.

The magazine will add 8 to 12 pages per issue, while adopting a less cluttered look, putting fewer C.E.O. portraits on its cover and adding a section advising readers on managing their careers. Fortune recently hired a renowned designer, John Korpics, to lead the redesign.

As of the end of September, ad pages across the magazine industry had fallen 27.3 percent, but business magazines fared much worse, and Fortune, down 34.9 percent, was among the hardest-hit. Its closest competitor, Forbes, was down 30.8 percent.

The changes at Fortune, originally reported in Friday’s Wall Street Journal, are part of another round of budget cuts at Time Inc., which is expected to include some layoffs.

Big Story
The Times's plan to charge its most frequent online visitors is an offense against the theology that the Web was built on a friction-free flow of information. But the problem with religion is that it provides succor, but not sustenance.
