Chancellorship of the University

20 May 2011

The Nomination Board has nominated Lord Sainsbury of Turville for the role of Chancellor of the University of Cambridge.

HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, will stand down as Chancellor on 30 June, shortly after reaching his 90th birthday and after serving 34 years in the role.

The Nomination Board, comprising all the members of the University Council and sixteen members appointed by the Senate, considered a long list of suggestions made by the Board and by individual members of the Senate before selecting Lord Sainsbury, who has agreed to nomination.

Lord (David) Sainsbury is a graduate of King's College and received the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Law in 1997. He was Minister of Science and Innovation between 1998 and 2006 and is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society, of the Royal Academy of Engineering and of the Academy of Medical Sciences.

This nomination is now before the University's Senate for approval. Fifty members of the Senate may nominate an alternative candidate.

If uncontested, Lord Sainsbury would become Chancellor on 1 July 2011.
