The use of semiconductors in various sectors has considerably increased demand for integrated circuits (ICs). To develop the Brazilian microelectronics industry, the Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT) invests in the segment through CI-Brasil.
In August 2008 the National Center for Advanced Electronic Technology (CEITEC) was created, the first chip factory in Latin America. The state-owned company is located in Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul State) and focuses on products related to wireless communications, radio frequency identification (RFID) and digital media.
Among the products developed by CEITEC are the chips for animal traceability, Cattle Chip, which is undergoing field tests, and digital TV modulators. Through Radio Frequency Identification, products have been created for vehicle tracking, airport automation, pharmaceuticals and blood-derived products, and electronic passports.
