History

The greatest history. The most success.

Founded in 1818, the Club boasts an unsurpassed record in rowing achievements.

Our Members include heroes such as Sir Steve Redgrave, Sir Matthew Pinsent, James Cracknell, Debbie Flood and Steve Williams. So it’s no wonder that  Leander Club members have won more Olympic and World championship medals than any other single-sport Club world-wide.

1818 – Leander Club is founded on the Tideway

1831 – Leander defeats Oxford in a race from Hambleden Lock to Henley Bridge

1860 – Club moves to Putney

1866 – Club builds first boat house at Putney

1897 – Club purchases land in Henley on Thames and begins new Clubhouse construction

1908 – first Olympic medal won

1998 –  Membership is opened to women

  • World Cup I

    Thirty Leander athletes have been announced as part of the new-look GB team that will contest the first World Cup regatta of the season in Sydney later this month.

  • GB Trials – February 2013

    The established international athletes took top honours at GB Trials in Boston, but promising performances by squad newcomers gave them top ten finishes alongside the more experienced names.

  • Australian Youth Olympic Festival

    All three Leander athletes returned with gold medals from last weekend’s Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney, where the warm summer sunshine had offered a welcome contrast to the freezing conditions back home.
