Journey through the Stars: Stefano Tacconi

Today’s Bianconeri legend is Stefano Tacconi, the only goalkeeper to have lifted all international club trophies

Juventus.com will continue to present the 50 Bianconeri legends whose names will be attached to the new stadium, chosen by the fans.

Today sees the return of the goalkeepers. Following Dino Zoff’s appearance in the top 50, Stefano Tacconi is the next shot stopper to feature amongst the Bianconeri stars. He joined from Avellino in 1983, when Super Dino decided to hang up his gloves at the age of 41. Tacconi proved to be a perfect replacement for the veteran, enjoying even more European success than his predecessor.

In fact, Tacconi was more successful than everyone. To this day, he is the only goalkeeper to have won all international club competitions, sharing these achievements with Bianconeri team mates Gaetano Scirea, Sergio Brio and Antonio Cabrini.

Tacconi won practically everything with Juventus. He ended his first season celebrating Scudetto and Cup Winners’ Cup triumphs, the latter in Basel against Porto made possible due to his wonderful saves. In the next two campaigns, the goalkeeper lifted another title, the European Super Cup, the Champions Cup and the Intercontinental Cup, performing yet more miracles in the penalty shoot-out. Following the Trapattoni and Platini era, Tacconi continued his winning streak with Coppa Italia and UEFA cup triumphs, this time as captain under the management of Zoff.

His nine-year stay in Torino drew to a close in 1992, having played 377 games and given the supporters memories to treasure. Tacconi’s extrovert character proved to be a winner with Bianconeri fans. However, the goal was to be guarded by another pair of safe hands, with Angelo Peruzzi taking his place.
