Strictly Come Dancing host Claudia Winkleman is in the running for a Royal Television Society (RTS) award for her presenting duties on the hit BBC1 show.

Winkleman joined co-presenter Tess Daly - who is not on the shortlist - when Sir Bruce Forsyth stepped down, and is up for an award for best entertainment performance.

The nomination is a coup for Winkleman, as neither Daly nor veteran presenter Sir Bruce have ever been nominated for an RTS award for Strictly - although Sir Bruce was crowned with a lifetime achievement award.

Winkleman goes up against Graham Norton for his duties on The Graham Norton Show, while Norton's BBC1 chatshow is also up for best entertainment programme alongside Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway (ITV) .

In other categories, EastEnders, which has just enjoyed huge success with its 30th anniversary live week, is up for best soap/continuing drama, alongside Casualty and ITV rival Coronation Street.

For best actress, Happy Valley (BBC1) star Sarah Lancashire is pitted against Sheridan Smith for her role as singer Cilla Black in the ITV biopic Cilla, and Georgina Campbell in the moving, true-story BBC3 drama Murdered By My Boyfriend.

Happy Valley is also up for best drama series, where it faces competition from hard-hitting Birmingham gang drama Peaky Blinders and police corruption drama Line Of Duty, both on BBC2.

Simon Cowell's shows The X Factor - which lost out in the ratings battle to Strictly last year - and Britain's Got Talent are not on the shortlist, which covers all genres of TV programming.

There is also no mention of sci-fi series Doctor Who, starring Peter Capaldi as the Time-Lord, or singing contest The Voice.

BBC1 show Great British Bake Off is up for a gong in the popular, factual and features category, vying against The Island With Bear Grylls (Channel 4) and 5 0 Ways To Kill Your Mammy (Sky 1HD).

The best actor shortlist features Toby Jones f or acclaimed show Marvellous (BBC Two), Tom Hollander for A Poet In New York (BBC2) and Adeel Akhtar for the second instalment of Utopia (Channel 4).

Many of the shortlisted programmes marked 100 years since the start of the First World War, with Our World War (BBC3) and The World's War: Forgotten Soldiers Of Empire (BBC2) in the history category.

D-Day: The Heroes Return (BBC1) and WW1 Remembered - From The Battlefield & From Westminster Abbey (BBC2) are up for best live event.

The winners - including recipients of the judges' award and lifetime achievement award - will be announce d at a ceremony on March 17 in London.
