Hualien County ranked as country's happiest place to reside, says survey

TAIPEI -- Hualien County has been rated as the happiest place to live in Taiwan, followed by Taitung County and the offshore Penghu County, according to a survey of the 2015 national happiness index.

New Taipei City, Chiayi County and Yunlin County were ranked as the least happy cities in that order, according to the index, which is based on a survey of 20 counties and cities in Taiwan.

The survey, conducted by the Chinese-language Economic Daily News and NanShan Life Insurance, also showed that Taipei City was the happiest of the country's six special municipalities, while New Taipei City was at the bottom of the list.

Taipei in fourth place and Taoyuan in fifth were the only two among the six municipalities to be listed in the top 10 nationwide.

The other three municipalities, Tainan, Kaohsiung and Taichung, were ranked 12th, 13th and 14th, respectively, nationwide.

Hualien has been ranked as the happiest place to live in Taiwan mainly because its residents' subjective feelings of happiness are driven by strong levels of satisfaction with work-life balance, living conditions, education, environmental quality and the performance of the local government, the survey indicated.

Hsinchu County, meanwhile, fell nine places from last year to 11th, based on dissatisfaction over health and personal safety and work-life balance, according to the survey.

Miaoli County and Hsinchu City both dropped five notches this year due to declining levels of subjective satisfaction, the survey showed.
