CREATING THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

On May 22, 1846: The Associated Press was established in New York City as a non-profit news cooperative. Originally founded as an agreement between five newspapers in order to share the cost of transmitting information during the Mexican-American War, the AP’s content is now published in over 1,700 newspapers.

JOHN EDWARD STEVENS

On May 22, 1953: Bank robber and FBI Most Wanted criminal, John Edward Stevens was born in New York City. Stevens was a suspect in over 25 robberies in eight states and was arrested on November 30, 1988 in Cincinnati, Ohio after six months on the FBI’s Most Wanted List.
