After decreasing in February and March, real gross domestic product edged up 0.1% in April. Widespread gains, notably in manufacturing, utilities and the public sector, were largely offset by a significant decline in non-conventional oil extraction.

Payroll employment, earnings and hours
April 2016
Average weekly earnings of non-farm payroll employees were $956 in April, little changed from the previous month (-0.3%) and from 12 months earlier (+0.2%).

Industrial product and raw materials price indexes
May 2016
The Industrial Product Price Index increased 1.1% in May, mainly due to higher prices for energy and petroleum products. The Raw Materials Price Index rose 6.7%, led by a gain in prices for crude energy products.

Canadian farmers reported seeding more land to lentils again this year, continuing the strong upward trend observed over the past four years. Seeding of soybeans and corn for grain increased, while canola was relatively unchanged from 2015. The areas seeded to spring wheat, oats and barley fell in 2016.
