CBS Inc. said that it had acquired Cassell Ltd., a British publishing subsidiary of Macmillan Inc., for an undisclosed price.

Under the agreement, CBS will acquire Cassell, which publishes school, business and technical reference books; Bailliere Tindall, Cassell Ltd.'s medical publishing operation, and Geoffrey Chapman, the British publisher's religious text operation. CBS said it would also become the exclusive trade distributor for Berlitz phrase books and travel guides.

Howard B. Turetsky, an analyst with Bache Halsey Stuart Shields, estimated Cassell's annual sales at between $10 million and $14 million.
