Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay healthcare staff to join 'Civil Disobedience Campaign'

Healthcare staff in Myanmar's administrative capital plan to join forces with other civil servants in the country to conduct peaceful protests opposing the current political situation.

The ‘Civil Disobedience Campaign’ was launched on February 2 and is a show of support for democracy and the civilian elected government.

“I don’t know how many healthcare staff members will join but there will be a lot. There is unrest at the hospitals in Nay Pyi Taw and across the country right now but we are also taking into consideration the welfare of our patients,” said a doctor who opted for anonymity.

The doctor said they have held discussions to determine who would be participating in the movement as they still have patients who are in need of medical attention.

Assistant surgeons from the 300-bed Children’s Hospital in Mandalay earlier announced that they would protest in peace starting from February 3 as they do not want to work under the new military formed government.

“We don't know who will lead this campaign but I am committed to this movement. I will not go to the office tomorrow (in support of the civil disobedience movement). It does not necessarily mean that I have (resigned) from my position.” said a member of the hospital. - Translated
