Longtime D.C. teacher and Washington Teachers' Union president Elizabeth Davis died in a car accident over the weekend, according to D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser.

Davis's nephew, Clarence Davis, told 7News D.C. Bureau Chief Sam Ford that the family had a large Easter dinner and get-together at Ms. Davis's home in Northeast D.C. with lots of children, at what had been the home of her late mother. A very happy occasion, he said.

He also said Mayor Bowser called his father, Ms. Davis’s brother, to express her condolences. Mayor Bowser held a moment of silence for Davis at a Monday morning news conference.

“I have gotten to know Liz so well and am so devastated by her tragic passing," she said. "I hope that you will all keep in your hearts and prayers the D.C. Public Schools family, the Washington Teachers' Union family, and the labor community in the District of Columbia, who has lost a champion."

The WTU released this statement Monday morning:

"It is with deepest sorrow that the WTU has announced the passing of President Elizabeth Davis.

President Davis has been at the forefront of public education advocacy and reform, leading the WTU’s transformation into a social justice, solution-driven organization dedicated to advancing and promoting quality education for all children, irrespective of their zip codes or results of the school lottery, improving teaching and learning conditions, and aggressively amplifying the voice of teachers in the dialogue around issues of teaching and learning. We are confident that her legacy will continue to shape the WTU as well as education across the District.

Please keep President Davis and her family in your prayers during this difficult time. Details on a celebration of her life will be forthcoming."
