4-star Alabama basketball signee leaving program

Jared Butler was the 17th-best point guard and 97th-best overall prospect in this year's class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

One of the top-ranked members of Alabama's most recent recruiting class is leaving the program and heading to the Big 12.

Four-star point guard Jared Butler was granted an unconditional release by Alabama, AL.com has confirmed, and will sign with Baylor.

Butler will enroll at Baylor for the fall semester and try to gain immediate eligibility, according to a Baylor news release.

"Our staff built a great relationship with Jared and his family during his recruitment, and we know he's a great fit for our program," Baylor coach Scott Drew said in a statement. "He's an explosive guard with the ability to create for his teammates and score from all over the court, but more importantly, he's a high character young man who will be a terrific teammate. We can't wait to welcome him to the Baylor family."

Before the recent addition of Kira Lewis, Butler had been the top-ranked member of this year's Crimson Tide recruiting class.

The Reserve, Louisiana native was the 17th-best point guard and 97th-best overall prospect in this year's class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Butler arrived in Tuscaloosa earlier this summer but had not been participating in Alabama's offseason workouts, per a source.
