The record-breaking surge of Covid-19 in Bangladesh is showing no signs of letting up, with the highest ever 96 deaths recorded in the 24 hours till Wednesday morning.
This was the fourth time in the last five days that the country broke its record for most Covid-19 deaths in a single day.
The total fatalities in the country now stands at 9,987, according to health directorate data collected between 8am Tuesday and 8am Wednesday.
The country also logged 5,185 new Covid-19 cases during the same period, taking the total number infections to 703,170, said the daily Covid-19 update from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) released Wednesday afternoon.
The latest data also marked a jump in the seven-day moving average of coronavirus fatalities to 77.14 from Tuesday’s 72.
Of the 96 deceased – 59 men and 37 women – 68 were from Dhaka division; 12 from Chittagong; five each from Khulna and Barisal; and three each from Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions.
Of the victims, 94 died at different hospitals and two at home.
So far, 7,435 men (74.55%) and 2,552 women (25.55%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, 5,785 people have died in Dhaka division, 1,796 in Chittagong, 535 in Rajshahi, 625 in Khulna, 299 in Barisal, 345 in Sylhet, 390 in Rangpur, and 212 in Mymensingh.
The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.42%.
The health authorities said 5,333 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.
So far, 591,299 patients – 84.09% – have made full recoveries across the country.
As many as 24,825 samples, including pending ones, were tested at 255 authorized labs across the country.
The latest figures show an infection rate of 20.89%. The overall infection rate in the country stands at 13.8%.
Currently, 16,956 people are in isolation and 50,051 are quarantined.
Till 2:30pm Wednesday, a total of 5.6 million people had received the first dose and 733,175 people the second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.
On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus named Sars-CoV-2.
The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December, 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
The fast spreading coronavirus had claimed 2,974,946 lives and infected 138,123,821 people across the world till Wednesday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
As many as 111,133,601 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has spread to 219 countries and territories across the planet.
