Former Canadian Amateur Hockey Association president and Life Patron of Hockey Canada passes at age 85

January 07, 2021

CALGARY, Alta. – The following is a statement on behalf of Hockey Canada from Tom Renney, chief executive officer, and Scott Smith, president and chief operating officer, on the passing of former Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) president Gordon Renwick.

“Hockey Canada is saddened to learn of the passing of former Canadian Amateur Hockey Association president and Distinguished Honouree of the Order of Hockey in Canada, Gordon Renwick, this afternoon. On behalf of the organization, we wish to extend our deepest sympathies to his wife Maggie, his entire family, his friends and everyone who had the opportunity to work with or meet Gordon. He dedicated his life to hockey, and made a significant and ever-lasting impact on the game across the country and internationally. He left his mark on our organization, and his influence continues to shape the way Hockey Canada and the game in general operate. Not only did he play a major role in growing the game in Canada through his instrumental work in establishing the TELUS Cup and Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence, he also exercised extraordinary leadership in establishing Canada and the CAHA in the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and international hockey at all levels. He served as the vice-president and is a Life Member of the IIHF, and Hockey Canada and the IIHF are both in a better position today because of Gordon’s passion and dedication to the game. We know his legacy will continue to live on through Hockey Canada.”
