Cambridge University has introduced an “over-subscription” clause to its offers, allowing it to withdraw places if too many students meet its entrance criteria.

The move to teacher assessment last summer resulted in a record number of A-level pupils getting the highest grades, meaning that more of them reached the requirements for competitive university offers. Cambridge said at the time it had made 4,500 offers for 3,450 places, and took on considerably more students than it would normally.
