Oxford University is at the centre of a rape scandal after a female member of its rowing club claimed she was sexually assaulted by one of the university’s top athletes.

The woman reported the allegation to Sir John Bell, the esteemed scientist who advises the government on Covid-19 and sits on the women’s boat club’s executive committee, but claimed that he diminished her allegation.

A disciplinary officer informed her that it could not take action because she had not reported the matter to police, even though her alleged attacker had written her a letter apologising for having “crossed that boundary”.

The woman is a member of the Oxford University Women’s Boat Club (OUWBC), which is due to compete this Sunday against Cambridge. The members of
