Former Raider, CISD board member, Gerald Irons dead at 73

THE WOODLANDS, TX -- Gerald Irons Sr. died on Thursday, according to a statement released by his family. The 10-year NFL linebacker with the Oakland Raiders and Cleveland Browns, 22-year Conroe ISD board member, and namesake of CISD’s Irons Junior High, passed due to complications of Parkinson’s disease.

“Gerald was a beloved member of The Woodlands community for over forty years,” said the family’s Facebook statement. “Gerald’s active involvement in The Woodlands community is legendary; His life was that of a servant leader. Gerald lived a life of service to his family, church, and community; to know Gerald was truly to love Gerald.”

Along with his pro career and work in Conroe ISD, Irons Sr. spent 32 years with The Woodlands Development Company. Irons was also the founding member of Impact Church in The Woodlands.

“As the Vice President of Business Development, Gerald led the relocation of hundreds of companies to The Woodlands,” said the family. “Gerald was also a sought-after motivational speaker, a graduate of the Houston FBI Citizens Academy, community board member of Texas Children’s Hospital and Memorial Hermann Hospital. The Irons’ Family were honored as “Original Hometown Heroes” in The Woodlands at the 25th Year Celebration, selected by The Woodlands residents.”

Conroe ISD Superintendent, Curtis Null released a statement on Friday. “Sad at the passing of Gerald Irons, Sr.,” said Null. “He was a wonderful man, husband, father, and community leader. This world and our community are better because he was here. We are honored that our Irons Junior High will continue to honor his legacy. Prayers to his beautiful family.”

“Gerald is survived by his loving family,” said the family’s Facebook statement.” “Myrna, his loving wife of fifty years; sons, Gerald, Jr., a graduate of the University of Nebraska, Jarrett (Jazelle) a graduate of the University of Michigan, and Grant, a graduate of the University of Notre Dame; grandson, Gerald Irons, III a student at the United States Military Academy at West Point; and two beautiful young granddaughters, Bella and Zoe.”
