The five new members of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights have been elected
Accra - 29 June 2007- The election of the five new members of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR) (four women and one man, see list below), took place during the eleventh Ordinary Session of the Executive Council, in line with the the 9th African Union Summit in Accra, Ghana.

THE 11th ORDINARY SESSION OF THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL KICKS OFF TODAY IN ACCRA, GHANA
Accra, Ghana - 27 June 2007- The eleventh Ordinary Session of the Executive Council begins holding today, Thursday June 28 2007 in Accra, Ghana.
For two days, the Executive Council, which comprises Ministers of Foreign Affairs of AU Member States, will consider several issues featuring on its agenda.
Top on the agenda of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs is discussion on the modalities of the election of members of the African Union Commission for a four year mandate. The Ministers are also expected to make arrangements for the election of the new members of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights. PRESS RELEASE

THE PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE (PRC) BEGINS MEETING IN ADDIS ABABA IN LINE WITH THEIR 14th ORNINARY SESSION
Addis Ababa 20 June 2007 – The Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC) on Monday 18 June began meeting at the headquarters of the African Union, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, within the framework of their 14th Ordinary Session. Holding some few days ahead of the official opening of the PRC meeting scheduled for Monday 25 June 2007, in Accra, capital city of the Republic of Ghana, the Ambassadors, Permanent Representatives of AU member States to take part in the Summit, have begun brainstorming on topical issues featuring on their agenda. The Assembly meeting of July 2005 in Sirte affirmed that the ultimate goal of the African Union is full political and economic integration leading to the United States of Africa.
At the 7th Session of the Assembly in Banjul in July 2006, the Assembly again reiterated this goal.
In November 2006, the Executive Council concluded, “All member states accept the United States of Africa as a common and desirable goal”.
From 8-9 May, 2007, the Executive Council met in Durban, South Africa to brainstorm on the state of the Union before the Summit is held in July. Media Advisory . Media Accreditation Form
