Five people have been arrested in connection to a protest outside a pub in Lewisham which was hosting a children's drag event.

The Honor Oak Pub held a “Magical Storytelling" session, yesterday (February 25), which was hosted by drag queen That Girl.

Organisation, Turning Point UK, claimed the event in Saint German's Road was not suitable for kids.

It announced plans on social media to protest the event in an attempt to stop it from taking place.

A group of protesters then gathered in opposition of acts being performing in front of children.

In response to the protest, hundreds of counter-protesters turned up in support of the event.

Officers were also in attendance and engaged with the group throughout, which was largely a “peaceful” protest.

A statement released by Honor Oak on Facebook on February 23 said the event is "all age appropriate".

It explained: "It has come to our attention that there may be some misunderstanding about the event.

"We wanted to reassure you all that our popular Magical Storytelling event will be age appropriate and it isn’t anything different to what families will see and experience together in a theatre.

"This event is an opportunity for families and friends to come together and listen to a reading of a storybook and have fun.

"The most important thing for us is that everyone is safe and happy when they are here."

The full statement from Metropolitan Police reads: "Police attended a protest outside a venue in Saint German's Road, SE23, 25 February.

“Officers engaged with the group throughout, facilitating what was largely a peaceful protest.

"It has since concluded. Five people were arrested in connection with the protest."
