Some of you may have seen me researching online signing services yesterday, testing about five different services through their trial accounts. One of those companies just called me up(!) and wanted to book me in for a demo of their product.

I said I went with Docuseal because it’s open source and I have control over my own data as I can self-host. “Oh is that important to you, why?”, he asked. So I actually went on a rant about digital ethics, indieweb and how we are tracked whatever products we use these days.

So that sent him off on a rant about how they use blockchain and are based in the EU and no data ever leaves the EU and the data always belongs to the customer.

So I’m like, “well how did the fucking blockchain protect me from you calling me at 8.30 in the morning!?”*

*Hmm, I actually didn’t say that last part because it just hit me when I hung up. And I have a hard time being rude on the phone. But wow I wish I did say that. Let’s just agree I did.

I've now published my free AI Trial and Evaluation Worksheet, along with a walkthrough of its topic areas.

« Many people are telling me how their companies are running tests of AI tools. This in itself is not strange at all. It's probably difficult as a leader today not to feel stressed by the manufacturers of AI promising revolutionary abilities that will radically change all of business as we know it. Promises that also tend to get big headlines in the news. There is an understandable sense of responsibility to get a handle on the situation.

However, these "trials" take place with varying degrees of instructions and frameworks. The "hurry-hustle-scurry" factor often leads to tunnel vision. Businesses become intimidation-driven rather than data-driven. The testing may, for example, lack the support needed to understand the tools – as well as any guidance on how the evaluation should be documented.

This template can help. Think of it as a way of taking a deep breath before making important decisions. »

I’m becoming more and more resolute on getting a tatoo for my 50th birthday (in June).

As this would be my first one, I thought I’d just pose an open question: is there anything I should think through regarding size, placement or other aspects. Happy to get advice from people more experienced. I expect there are many rookie mistakes to avoid.

The tatoo will be Africa-related and likely involve a map of Africa. So, yeah, I have not decided on the artwork yet.

’Lavender’ is the name of an artificial intelligence-based program developed by the Israeli army which has has played a central role in the unprecedented bombing of Palestinians.

It is ”designed to mark all suspected operatives in the military wings of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), including low-ranking ones, as potential bombing targets.”

Thousands of Palestinians not involved in the fighting ”were wiped out by Israeli airstrikes, especially during the first weeks of the war, because of the AI program’s decisions.”

”During the early stages of the war, the army gave sweeping approval for officers to adopt Lavender’s kill lists, with no requirement to thoroughly check why the machine made those choices or to examine the raw intelligence data on which they were based.”

”Another source said that they had personally authorized the bombing of ’hundreds’ of private homes of alleged junior operatives marked by Lavender, with many of these attacks killing civilians and entire families as ’collateral damage.’”

”Additional automated systems, including one called ’Where’s Daddy?’ also revealed here for the first time, were used specifically to track the targeted individuals and carry out bombings when they had entered their family’s residences.”
