In response to your inquiry, our winemakers tell us both animal and fish products (e.g., commercial, food-grade gelatin) have been used in winemaking for centuries and are recognized as traditional methods for wine fining, or clarifying. Generally no gelatin remains in the wine because it reacts with the wine components, as it clarifies, and forms a sediment which is removed by filtration prior to bottling. Exceptions to this are a few of our premium wines that undergo minimal or no filtration prior to bottling and therefore may not be completely free of animal products."

Thank you for contacting us about our Beringer wines. After checking with our winemaking team, I have learned that on a very limited number of our red wines we might add casein (from milk) and albumen (egg whites). Both of these are proteins and are used as fining agents to remove tannins and reduce astringency. These are removed as precipitates and it is doubtful any traces of these proteins remain after the fining operation. It depends from year to year which red wines may be put through this process, so I can't tell you specifically which wines might be affected. On the other hand, our white and blush wines, such as Chardonnay and White Zinfandel are not fined at all. They may go through a filtering agent such as cellulose pads or diatomaceous earth. In membrane filtration the wine is passed through a thin film of plastic polymer material having uniformly sized holes. In both cases nothing is added to the wine.

Ah, sounds semi-good, but then we get company email 2:

Thank you for contacting Beringer. We do not recommend any of our wine for vegans due to the possibility that the wine has been clarified with fining agents such as egg albumin, casein, gelatin and isinglass. The winemakers decide on which fining agents are used and these may vary from product to product and even batch to batch (usually depending on the grapes of that particular year). It is important to note that despite fining agents being used during the winemaking process, they are removed prior to bottling. We appreciate your interest in our wines!

Even though we try to be as ethical as viticultually possible, I'm sorry to say, our wines are for the most part not vegan. [ed: hmm, that looks familiar...]

Some of our red wines may be vegan as we normally do not filter or fine our reds. However, there are instances when we use either skim milk or egg whites as fining agents to remove microscopic particles that could cloud the wines. But to be on the safe side, our wines overall cannot be guaranteed vegan.

Our previous entry was based on feedback from a restaurant, but Jenna set us straight - it's always best to go to the source:
"One of the wine companies most widely known to be vegan, Bonterra, actually uses egg whites in their fining. You should take them off your wine list and even consider running a blurb—Native Foods, Herbivore, and a ton of other vegan restaurants sell or have sold them, and tons of vegans I know like to drink it. Their white wines are vegan, but their red wines are NOT. I just got off the phone with James Caudill, one of their reps, and he confirmed it."

Seconded by Mo - company email:
"We use egg whites in the fining process of our red wines. However, our white wines are free of any animal products and are vegetarian and vegan friendly. Ages ago, it was discovered that egg whites added to wine would aid in removing unwanted tannins. This 'tannin fining' process is used to improve the flavor of red wines by limiting the astringency caused by the tannins. The egg whites settle to the bottom and are then filtered out. All residue of the egg whites is removed from the wine."

Greetings, Tannis. I think that you are in luck. None of our wines (especially the Rieslings) have any animal products in them. The whites are fined with Bentonite (a volcanic clay like material) and filtered through Diatomaceous Earth.

In the past, we have used gelatin to fine our reds but we haven't done that for years and never to a Gamay or a Pinot. I did try egg white fining experiments in the lab but they failed miserably, so I won't be doing that.

I guess the short answer to your question would be- No, we do not use animal products in our wines. Drink and enjoy them!

Exceptions to this are a few of our premium wines that undergo minimal or no filtration prior to bottling and therefore may not be completely free of animal products.

We use organic egg whites in the fining process of our red wines. However, our white wines are free of any animal products and are vegan friendly.

Ages ago, it was discovered that egg whites added to wine would aid in removing unwanted tannins. This 'tannin fining' process is used to improve the flavor of red wines by limiting the astringency caused by the tannins. The egg whites settle to the bottom and are then filtered out. All residue of the egg whites is removed from the wine.

Yes, we do use animals and animal products. All the grapes are pollinated by animals, usually bees. Also, we use various living yeasts to effect the fermentation. While several generations of yeasts may survive the ferment, ultimately they are all killed as the alcohol rises. The bottles are sealed with natural cork, but the trees are not killed in the process as only 1/2 their bark is taken each harvest. Last, there may be animal products in the label glue. Not sure though as there is no ingredients on the content.

That’s all I can think of offhand. I hope that helps.

Our wine makers use various fining agents during the wine making process. Some of these products are suitable for vegans, however sometimes in order to get the wine just right, they add products such as gelatin. It depends on how the wine making is going and how the particular "recipe batch" is going. The wine makers then decide which fining agents should be added to achieve the desired end result.

We are sorry we don't have a more specific answer but unfortunately, it does vary from vintage to vintage.

Treatment of wines with milk or egg products is a common wine industry practice and is done by winemakers as needed to provide the appropriate treatment and clarity to the wine. These milk or egg products are removed during the filtering of the wines after treatment. At Gallo Family Vineyard we go one step further to verify that milk or egg products do not remain after filtration by testing each lot of wine that is treated.

Kendall-Jackson may use one of the following as a fining agent in its red wines:

Egg whites

Gelatin

These fining agents are used to soften tannins from the seeds and grapes prior to bottling. After the agents react with the wine, they are racked away and there should be no residue left in the final product.

The above-listed fining agents are not used in our white wines, as the
grapes are pressed immediately upon arrival and there is minimal contact between the juice, seeds and skins.

Thank you for taking the time to contact us at Nathanson Creek wines. We appreciate hearing from you!

Fining agents are used on a lot-by-lot basis by the winemaker to optimize wine quality. Some fining agents contain proteinaceous materials. Proteinaceous fining agents are used to react with color and/or tannin molecules to make them removable by subsequent filtration. Both the fining agent, the color and/or tannin it reacts with are removed by the filtration process.

All of our fining agents are approved by the Alcohol & Tobacco Tax & Trade Bureau (TTB, formerly the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms)

One of our standard fining agents contains Micronized potassium casseinate [casein is milk protein], food grade gelatin, egg albumin and other food grade components.

Thanks for your question. It's an interesting one. The short answer - no we don't use animal products in making our wine. The gentle way we grow, pick, and ferment our grapes leads to naturally balanced tannin levels, so we don't need to add animal proteins to achieve correct tannin levels.

Now for the long answer:
It's true that animal proteins are frequently used in winemaking. Their function is usually to control the levels of tannins in the wine. Tannins are complex molecules that react with proteins. They are naturally produced by many types of plants as a natural defensive compound against pests and stressful conditions. In wine, overripe or stressed grapes can produce large quantities of tannins while still on the vine, and these tannin levels can be exacerbated by rough handling of the grapes during fermentation in the winery.

When tannins react with the proteins in your mouth, they produce a drying, gritty sensation. In subtle quantities, tannins create a velvety texture to the wine; in greater quantities the sensation is decidedly unpleasant. That's why some winemakers regularly fine their wines to remove excess tannins. The tannins react with the proteins in the fining agent and precipitate them to the bottom of the barrel, making the wines taste softer and more palatable.

However, at The Eyrie Vineyards we moderate tannins naturally. We carefully manage the amount of sunlight that falls on the fruit, keeping stress to a minimum while boosting ripeness. Our organic spray program keeps the grapes free of mildews and molds that lead the plants to create defensive tannins. Our deep rooted vines tap into perennial sources of water. As a result, drought stress is minimized and so are tannins.

The grapes are picked by hand, destemmed whole berry, pressed in old fashioned platen style presses, and aged in neutral oak barrels. These gentle winemaking techniques preserve the fruit flavors and give us naturally balanced wines that require little intervention on the part of the winemaker.

All of our [yellow tail] red wines are vegan – they contain absolutely no animal byproducts, nor are animal byproducts used during any phase of the winemaking process. Our [yellow tail] white wines, however, do use gelatin as part of the finishing/clarification process. Due to the incredible amount of vegan inquiries we receive, we will be posting this information on our website shortly.
