In Lebanon, the most important categories in the consumer price index are housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (28 percent of the total weight); food and non-alcoholic beverages (20 percent); and transport (13 percent). The index also includes: health (8 percent); education (7 percent); clothing and footwear (5 percent); and communication (5 percent). Furnishings, household equipment and maintenance, alcoholic beverages and tobacco, recreation, amusement and culture, restaurants and hotels, and other goods and services account for the remaining 15 percent of total weight.

Lebanon Inflation Rate Eases to 14-Month Low
Lebanon’s annual inflation rate dropped to 123.2% in February 2024 from 177.3% in the previous month. It marked the lowest inflation rate since December 2022, due mainly to softer rises in housing (175.6% vs 208.5% in January) and transport prices (65.0% vs 103.7%) while food prices increased the least in nearly four years (103.4% vs 181%). Also, prices advanced at a slower pace for clothing and footwear (75.1% vs 133.8%), restaurants & hotels (81.5% vs 154.1%), alcoholic beverages, tobacco (87.1% vs 195.4%), furnishings (41.5% vs 122.8%), health (76.3% vs 146.5%), and education (590.7% vs 595.2%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices climbed by 1.1% in February, easing from a 2.9% gain in the prior month, which was the most in three months.

Lebanon Inflation Rate at 12-Month Low
Lebanon’s annual inflation rate eased to 177.3% in January 2024 from 192.3% in December 2023. It was the lowest inflation rate since January last year, due mainly to softer rises in transport prices (103.7% vs 123.9% in December), while food prices increased the least in a year (181% vs 207.6%). Also, prices advanced at a slower pace for restaurants & hotels (154.1% vs 197.6%), alcoholic beverages, tobacco (195.4% vs 203.5%), furnishings (122.8% vs 143.1%), and health (146.5% vs 173.6%). Meanwhile, housing & utilities prices continued to rise (208.5% vs 206.7%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices climbed by 2.9% in January, the most in three months, after edging up 0.02% in the previous month.
