Liverpool stand strengthened
Liverpool are having to strengthen part of the Anfield Road stand after it swayed during a testimonial match.
Three steel columns are to be inserted into the upper tier of the stand, which will be closed for Liverpool's glamour friendly with Parma on Sunday. But Liverpool have stressed the building work will be completed in time for the big Premiership kick-off against Bradford City on 19 August. A Liverpool statement said: "The solution adopted by the club, on the advice of their engineers, is to stiffen the upper terrace to prevent a repeat of such movement. "Three steel columns, therefore, will be constructed to raise the natural frequency of the structure. "A programme has been prepared to carry out the necessary building works, and these will be completed before the first league game." Liverpool City Council, who are the ground's licensing authority, told the Reds to sort out the problem or close 50% of the stand. The council acted after the upper tier was seen to move slightly when Celtic fans jumped up and down en masse during Ronnie Moran's testimonial match in May. |
