Tie against Costa Rica still gives Mexico Group B crown

25.2.07 - A 1:1 tie against Costa Rica gave the host Mexico the 2007 CONCACAF U-20 Final Round Group B title on Sunday at the Banorte Stadium in Culiac�n, Sinaloa.

The crowd of 19,051 saw Jean Carlos Solorzano gave Costa Rica (2-0-1, 7 Points) a 1:0 lead in the opening six minutes of the match but Enrique Esqueda scored the equaliser in the 70th minute for Mexico has they finish first in Group B on goal difference (+4 to +3).

Prior to the encounter on Sunday, the ticos and tricolores had already qualified to the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup last Friday and will join Panama and USA from Group A along with the host, Canada at the FIFA event that will run 30 June � 12 July.

The official draw for the FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007 will take place at the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex in Toronto, Ontario on 3 March.

In an earlier match on Sunday at the Banorte Stadium, St. Kitts & Nevis (0-2-1, 1 Points) earned their first-ever points in a CONCACAF Final Round event after holding Jamaica (0-2-1, 1 Point) to a 1:1 draw.

The reggae boyz took a 1:0 advantage in the 36th minute with a goal by Joel Grant, but Matthew Berkeley leveled the score for the sugar boyz with 13 minutes remaining.

From 1962 � 1996, CONCACAF staged 16 Under-20 Tournaments with a winner being crowned in each. Eleven of the CONCACAF tournaments (1976 � 1996) doubled as qualifiers to the FIFA World Youth Championships. In 1998, the U-20 CONCACAF event became a Final Round Qualification consisting of two groups of four, each in a different venue, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the FIFA Youth World Championship (now FIFA U-20 World Cup).
