Young Agard becomes a Miller

Posted on: Fri 27 Jul 2012

On the eve of tomorrow's pre-season friendly with Hearts, Rotherham United have concluded a deal to sign young striker Kieran Agard, subject to a satisfactory medical.

The Millers fought off interest from clubs in League One and Two to secure the 22-year-old's signature, after he further alerted watching scouts on Tuesday night when he scored the winning goal in the Millers victory over Doncaster Rovers.

The goal and his impressive display ensured a rapid response from boss Steve Evans, who was quick to add the talented striker to his squad on a two-year deal.

Speaking in the last few minutes to the official website, www.themillers.co.uk manager Steve Evans said: ''Kieran is a young man I tried to sign last summer and again in the last January transfer window so I suppose you could say it is third time lucky.

''The lad has frightening pace, a real desire to work hard and I think our supporters have already taken to him. He never lets defenders have a minutes rest and is always on the move so defenders find it difficult to mark him.

''Last season he scored almost one goal in every two matches he started and that is a ratio that any striker would be pleased with. He is hungry to score goals and is very excited about the direction Rotherham United is taking. He has trained with us for a week and of course played a meaningful part on Tuesday night and from that we can all see he is a talented lad."

The player has played was involved in the Arsenal academy before he signed for Premiership Everton as a young professional. In his time with the Merseyside giants he made his full first team debut in a League Cup tie against Hull City and appeared in the Premiership, albeit briefly, against Chelsea.

Last season he was in League One with Yeovil Town, where he bagged an impressive brace against local rivals Sheffield Wednesday. The youngster started just 13 matches for Yeovil Town but returned a very impressive six goals.

Agard, who has been allocated squad number 22 for the Millers, is included a strong squad for tomorrow's pre-season friendly with Scottish Cup winners Hearts. He will join fellow new signing Michael O'Connor who has shrugged off an injury to be in a strong position to make his Millers debut.

''I have included him in the squad that will face a very talented Hearts team tomorrow," added Evans.

"That is a match we are all looking forward to and we all hope that our supporters again are in full voice, they make a huge difference. Kieran Agard is an excellent signing for us, the squad is not far from completion and we are working hard in the background for that to happen.''

Supporters are reminded that the match with Hearts tomorrow kicks-off at 2pm and tickets will be on sale at the club offices tomorrow morning, 9am-11am.
