National Cell Transplantation Program named for Young

December 20
, 2005
-- Representative C.W. Bill Young today joined President George W. Bush and Congressional leaders for a White House bill signing ceremony establishing a National Umbilical Cord Blood Program.  The initiative, named for Representative Young in recognition of his significant contribution to the cord blood program and the bone marrow registry program, will provide $79 million in federal funding to dramatically increase the number of cord blood units available for public use and to establish a network that allows transplant physicians access to adult volunteers donors and cord blood units, according to the National Marrow Donor Program.

"The National Umbilical Cord Blood Program will significantly enhance our current availability and access for patients in need of transplants to treat blood disorders," Young said.  "This new single-source program is yet one more step we are making within the health community to better address the needs of so many patients."

Young Cuts Ribbon at New Regional Water Reservoir

October 10
, 2005
-- Representative C.W. Bill Young today joined with community and civic leaders from Tampa Bay area counties to cut the ribbon on the new C.W. Bill Young Regional Reservoir.  Tampa Bay Water has worked for nearly a decade on the new 15 billion gallon reservoir which collects water from the Alafia and Hillsborough Rivers in an environmentally responsible way and supplements the collection with natural rainwater.  Through Young's Chairmanship of the House Appropriations Committee the federal government contributed $59 million to the project to supplement state and regional funding.

"Since the beginning of our nation, we have witnessed disagreements over water and water rights," Young said.  "This reservoir we dedicate today represents our communities coming together in a historic way to address the ongoing water needs of the Tampa Bay area.  Although we must still work on issues of conservation, this reservoir will make an immeasurable impact on the supply of water throughout our area.  I commend Tampa Bay Water, Southwest Florida Water Management District and all the people who worked so hard to make this dream a reality."

Young Holds Congressional Hearing to Discuss Hurricane-Related Damage to Gulf Coast Defense Facilities

September 28
, 2005
-- Representative C.W. Bill Young today led a hearing by the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, which he chairs, to investigate hurricane-related damage to defense facilities along the gulf coast.   Department of Defense operations located in the areas hit by hurricanes Katrina and Rita were significantly impacted by the storms.  Additionally, Young's subcommittee considered recent Administration proposals to vest the Department of Defense with greater responsibility in responding to natural disasters.  "I can understand why the President wants to expand the military's role in this area, but I also understand how overextended the military already is," Young said.

Earlier today, Young met at length with General John Abizaid, Commander of United States Central Command to discuss ongoing operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as other issues in the current War on Terrorism.

Young Joins in Announcing Creation of Rehabilitation Center for Wounded Service Members

July 28
, 2005
-- Representative C.W. Bill Young today joined with the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund in announcing the creation of a new state-of-the-art rehabilitation and physical therapy center at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas.  Through Young's leadership on the Appropriations Committee, Congress recently raised the death gratuity for families of fallen service members from roughly $12,000 to $100,000 and raised the optional Servicemembers Group Life Insurance coverage from $250,000 to $400,000.  As a result, the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, which had previously provided a private gratuity to families of the fallen, shifted its program from direct grants to military families to the construction of "The Center for the Intrepid," a world class facility for military personnel who have been catastrophically disabled in operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and other conflicts around the globe.

"So many men and women in uniform have made an extraordinary sacrifice to secure freedom and liberty around the globe and to protect our homeland," Young said.  "With this new facility, the Army will continue to ensure that our wounded heroes returning from battle receive the absolute best in military medicine and rehabilitation services.  They deserve nothing less."

Young Joins Coast Guard Commandant in Establishing USCG Sector St. Petersburg

July 11
, 2005
-- Representative C.W. Bill Young today joined with Admiral Thomas Collins, Commandant of the United States Coast Guard, for a change-of-command ceremony and a stand-up of the Coast Guard's new Sector St. Petersburg.   The new sector combines the Coast Guard's Group St. Petersburg and the Marine Safety Office in Tampa.  The new sector will serve an area from Yankeetown to Fort Myers and among other things will enhance homeland security communication initiatives.  "Pinellas County has a proud Coast Guard tradition and this latest enhancement demonstrates the strategic importance of our area," Young said.
