Eat Street: Oak Tree Road, Iselin, N.J.
Home to one of America's largest South Asian communities, Central New Jersey is a cornucopia of saris, samosas, and garam masala. Oak Tree Road, a colorful, chaotic stretch of restaurants and shops linking the towns of Edison and Iselin, is the area's throbbing heart. But don't expect the usual kebab-and-curry fare. Here, India is represented in all its culinary complexity, from the sweet farsan (snacks) of Gujarat to the spicy street food of Mumbai and the meaty entrées of Chettinad.

Thanks for this article! I grew up shopping at Sabzi Mandi - great selection as well as Patel Brothers. Also some of my favorite spots in this area - Dosa Express (the service is brisk but the food is great), the chole bhatura from Jassi Sweets, and Bombay Chaat House - a converted ice cream parlour that now serves chaat! Recently my aunt also took me to a place nearby called Calcutta Chinese where the owner is Chinese but grew up in Calcutta. He serves an amazing fusion of the two cuisines.
