Americans under age 1 now mostly minorities, but not in Ohio: Statistical Snapshot

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Estimates for 2011 recently released by the Census Bureau show that most U.S. residents under the age of 1 are now from minority groups, but that is far from the case in Ohio.

Here's a look at Ohio and how the state compares nationally.

Total Population:

  • Ohio: 19 percent minority
  • Ohio's rank among states: 35th
  • United States: 36.6 percent minority

Under Age 1
  • Ohio: 27.6 percent
  • Ohio's rank among states: 38th
  • United States: 50.4 percent

Overall, Ohio's population breaks down this way: 83.6 percent white, 12.4 percent black, 0.3 percent American Indian or Alaska native, 1.7 percent Asian and 1.9 percent multi-race.

Separately, 3.2 percent are Hispanic. Among the Hispanics, 82.3 percent are white, 9 percent black, 2.4 percent American Indian or Alaska native, 0.8 percent Asian, 0.5 percent native-Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander, and 5 percent mulit-race.

Ohio's white, non-Hispanic population is 81 percent, leaving the other 19 percent as minorities.
