Our Story

From the heights of the Palisades at Fort Lee to the shores of the Delaware River at Red Bank Battlefield, The Crossroads of the American Revolution National Heritage Area offers an unprecedented opportunity to interpret and celebrate our state’s rich history through collaborative partnerships. Historic sites, preservation groups, historical societies, friends organizations, state, county and local governments, schools, libraries and museums will work together to tell the stories of the American Revolution and New Jersey’s significant contributions to our nation.

The Crossroads of the American Revolution National Heritage Area encompasses approximately 2,155 square miles in New Jersey, including 212 municipalities in 14 counties. Federal legislation specifies its role:

• to assist communities, organizations, and citizens in preserving New Jersey’s historic identity;
• to foster close working relationships among all levels of government, the private sector, and communities;
• to provide for the preservation and interpretation of resources for the educational and inspirational benefit of future generations; and
• to strengthen Morristown National Historical Park as an asset to the state.

What is a National Heritage Area?

National Heritage Areas are places where history, cultural and natural wonders intersect with everyday places where people live and work. An NHA is a region that may cross state and county boundaries that has been recognized by Congress for its unique contribution to the nation’s history. NHA’s are guided by the National Park Service but they are run by local organizations and partnerships interested in promoting and preserving unique resources. In short, the NHA’s tell America’s story. The Crossroads of the American Revolution National Heritage Area is one of 49 around the country.

The National Park Service website provides a complete list of National Heritage Areas, with information on visiting the areas, how National Heritage Areas are created, and benefits to communities. Crossroads is a member of the Alliance of National Heritage Areas.

The National Park Service is a key partner in this effort, providing crucial financial and technical assistance. Morristown National Historical Parkcollaborates with us in this effort. Like most National Heritage Areas, Crossroads of the American Revolution is managed by a dedicated non-profit organization, Crossroads of the American Revolution Association, Inc.

Management Plan

The Crossroads of the American Revolution National Heritage Area was established to promote a greater understanding of Revolutionary Era historical sites, communities and other organizations in New Jersey. Established by Congress in 2006, the National Heritage Area’s programs and activities are guided by its federally approved management plan.

The plan provides a road map that will help residents and visitors Discover Revolutionary New Jersey as a way to uncover their own Revolutionary spirit.

The plan is divided into two parts. Part I (27M pdf file) documents the comprehensive process used to develop the heritage area’s goals and objectives, establish a focused course of action, and assess the area’s environment. Part II (3M pdf file) is the implementation plan, outlining specific action items for the heritage area to pursue over the next 5 to 10 years to meet its goals.
