HOLLAND – Total Logistic Control, a subsidiary of Supervalu Inc., has been acquired by Ryder System Inc.

In a deal unveiled Wednesday, Ryder will acquire TLC, headquartered at 10717 Adams St., for cash through a stock-purchase agreement. The acquisition is expected to add $250 million in sales to Ryder's supply chain operations.

TLC, with 2,500 employees across 13 states, provides supply chain services to food, beverage, and consumer packaged goods manufacturers and distributors, many in the U.S. The business is expected to continue as a group within Ryder. TLC has area warehouses in Holland and Zeeland, and a warehouse and maintenance facility in Kalamazoo.

The company was founded in Kalamazoo by George K. Taylor in 1902, as the Taylor Produce Co. The business operated frozen warehouse operations for regional food companies.

It was acquired by Supervalu in 2005, and opened its new Holland headquarters in 2008.

The latest deal is expected to close by Dec. 31, pending regulatory approvals.

“Total Logistic Control is a well-known and highly regarded supply chain solutions provider in the demanding industry sectors that it serves,” said Ryder CEO Greg Swienton. The acquisition will complement Ryder's other groups, including automotive, high-tech, industrial and retail.

The new owners expect to build on TLC's prowess in packaging and temperature-controlled warehousing, said John Williford, Ryder president of global supply chain solutions. The TLC business will be bundled in a new CPG (consumers packaged goods) group.

“We are excited about the opportunities for growth,” TLC CEO Peter Westermann said. “We are proud of the reputation we’ve earned and our strong capabilities in serving the food, beverage, and CPG industries.”

TLC clients are manufacturers of food and beverages and distributors of consumer and wholesale goods. The company has 34 sites in 13 states, totaling 10.6 million square feet of dry and temperature-controlled warehouses.
