Ryder Systems Inc. on Tuesday announced what it says is the largest deal ever for electric trucks in the U.S.

The Miami-based transportation and logistics company (NYSE: R) signed a leasing and maintenance agreement for 1,000 medium-duty electric panel vans by California-based Chanje Energy. The company said the vehicles will be operated by FedEx Express for commercial and residential pick-up and delivery services in the country. They are expected to be deployed throughout California in the next two years.

“With our focus on innovation and technology, combined with our entry into the EV market more than a year ago, we've made it easy for customers such as FedEx to adopt sustainable, advanced vehicle technologies," said Dennis Cooke, president of Global Fleet Management Solutions for Ryder. "We continue to see broadening interest in EVs from businesses of various sizes and industries looking to outsource – especially in the final mile delivery space where a smaller, more environmentally-friendly vehicle is required."

Last year, entered into a deal to become the exclusive sales partner for Chanje. Its trucks can haul up to 6,000 pounds and up to 675 cubic feet of cargo with zero emissions, the company says, up to 150 miles on a single charge. The company claims that replacing a diesel truck with one of its electric vehicles will save as much carbon emissions as 20 acres of U.S. forest would absorb in one year.

Ryder has about 36,000 employees, including more than 8,000 drivers.
