United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)

Info

With 197 Parties, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has near universal membership and is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Climate Change Agreement. The main aim of the Paris Agreement is to keep a global average temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius and to drive efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The UNFCCC is also the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The ultimate objective of all agreements under the UNFCCC is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system, in a time frame which allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and enables sustainable development.

The renewable energy transition relies on critical #minerals, such as copper, lithium, nickel and cobalt. These minerals are an opportunity to create jobs and diversify economies - but only if managed well. More about the new United Nations Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals 👇

As we reshape how we power our societies and economies, we cannot replace one dirty, exploitative, extractive industry with another. The renewable energy revolution is in full swing – and critical minerals, such as copper, lithium, nickel & cobalt, are at the core of this shift. For developing countries with large reserves, critical minerals are an opportunity to create jobs, diversify economies, and dramatically boost revenues - but only if they are managed properly. Too often, production of these minerals leaves a toxic cloud in its wake: pollution, wounded communities, childhoods lost to labour. And developing countries and communities have not reaped the benefits of their production and trade. Today, I launched my Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals, tasked with the development of a set of voluntary global principles to guide governments, industry and others involved in critical minerals value chains. The aim is to address issues of fairness, transparency, investment, sustainability and human rights. Developing countries cannot be shackled to the bottom of the clean energy value chain. The race to net zero cannot trample over the poor. https://lnkd.in/e-AtRAJM

#G7 leadership in #climateaction is more vital than ever.   This forum - comprised of the world‘s largest developed economies, can and should make bolder strides. Particularly through much deeper emissions cuts, and bigger and better climate finance this year.   We can only get the climate crisis under control if we treat bold new national climate plans and a quantum leap in climate finance, as core business.   If I may be frank, “challenging budget conditions” is not an acceptable excuse for failing to deliver substantial new public climate finance pledges.   And any advanced economy that rolls out this excuse should feel doubly compelled to deliver on other finance fronts, like flexing their shareholder muscle to force bigger and faster efforts by the multilateral banks, or pushing on innovative sources of finance.   G7 leadership is essential, if we are to avoid a global economic disaster. Finance is 🔑 to climate action. A new phase of work on one of the most important items currently on the global climate change agenda – setting a new goal on climate finance by the end of 2024 – got underway last week in Cartagena, Colombia. The meeting marked a significant shift in the mode of work – from the technical to the political – to enable the development of a draft negotiating text on the ‘new collective quantified goal’ on climate finance for consideration at the COP29 UN Climate Change Conference in November. Read our article to learn more about the process of establishing the new finance goal: https://bit.ly/4becSL4

We need a quantum leap for #climatefinance. During The World Bank & International Monetary Fund Spring Meetings last week, some helpful steps forward were taken. But we need more. So when I will meet with G7 environment and climate ministers next week in Italy, my message to them will be crystal clear. Mobilize all ministers across your governments, especially your finance ministers and treasurers, and urge them: Push for more from the multilateral development banks. Unlock more finance. And faster.   My full intervention at #Petersberg2024 👉 bit.ly/3xTU2KR

Bangladesh is widely seen as a leader in adapting to the impacts of climate change. The South Asian country has:   🌀 Built 2,000 cyclone shelters distributed over coastal districts where people can take refuge in the case of severe storms.   🌴 Put a major emphasis on nature-based solutions, including the creation of coastal and hill forests that serve as barriers against erosion and flooding.    ✍️ Designed a detailed National Adaptation Plan which draws investment into sectors in need of resilience like energy, water, transport, and agriculture.   👷🏽 Sees resilience-building as an opportunity to create prosperity and jobs.   Experts meeting at a high-level dialogue at NAP Expo 2024 in Dhaka this week set out what it takes to drive transformational adaptation through more effective and properly financed National Adaptation Plans (NAPs).   🔗 Read more: https://bit.ly/3w7lMee

We need to stop treating climate change #adaptation as a theoretical concept and start embedding it as a way of life. Still today, only 54 developing countries have produced a National Adaptation Plan (NAP) under the UNFCCC process. UN Climate Change, working with partners, will: 👉 Mobilize UNFCCC secretariat resources to accelerate the formulation of NAPs for the 100 developing countries that have not completed their NAPs yet. 👉 Complete a full scoping of new and innovative sources of finance for adaptation implementation. 👉 Support countries in matching their funding needs with available funding sources. Prioritising adaptation is the only way to develop resilience for every nation against the impacts of climate change.
