Ever wondered what cows get up to when nobody’s looking?
Well now you don’t have to.
Thanks to the power of 5G connectivity, some very fancy wearable tech and a brand new app we’ve created, the answer to this burning question is no longer out of reach.
Our app, called Me+Moo, lets users connect with a real-life cow and get updates about its activity straight to their phone.
How does it work?
The cows on our ‘connected farm’ are all fitted with IoT collars and leg sensors that allow farmers to keep track of their health and wellbeing based on feeding, sleeping, milking and resting data.
By tapping into that data, our app makes that data available to you for the first time ever.
Users can choose a cow to connect with, join a ‘herd’ or create their own and invite others to be part of it, and then start tracking their cow through the apps ‘moonitor’ dashboard.
On top of the data there’s plenty of educational content within the app, from daily farmer vlogs exploring the farm and the tech to information about the 5G RuralFirst project.
There’s even a bit of friendly competition involved, with each herd competing to reach the top of the leaderboard based on their cow’s behaviour and their own interaction with the app.
Why Me+Moo?
5G RuralFirst has always been about demonstrating the benefits of bringing high-speed 5G connectivity beyond the city and into rural areas, not just for citizens but also for business and industry.
One of the most instantly relatable ways to do that is showing the positive impact 5G connectivity could have on farming.
Beyond the significant contribution the agriculture industry makes to UK GDP, UK farmers produce over 60% of the food that is consumed in the UK and around 500,000 people rely on agriculture for employment. It goes without saying, it’s an industry we should be proud of and 5G connectivity could help keep it efficient and productive for many more years to come.
The Me+Moo app shows how sensor technology can be used to gather data from ‘things’ – even living things – in rural industries that can transform the way they operate.
In this case making real-time data more accessible helps dairy farmers improve the efficiency of the farm and – most importantly – enhance the welfare of its animals.
It shows how those in the farming sector can manage their business remotely using real-time information – all made possible by reliable, pervasive mobile connectivity.
But because this part of the project is so special and illustrates the benefits of rural 5G connectivity so clearly, we felt everyone in the UK should know about it.
