  • The day before Mass, a servant tells me that Gabrielle is waiting for me in the drawing room.
  • Gabrielle is sitting on a chair. I ask the servants to leave the room.
  • You: I found an excuse to get Madame Deniau to leave me alone. She will be kept busy all day.
  • You: She won't be able to follow us. When do we start?
  • Gabrielle takes out a finely crafted bag, and opens it.
  • Gabrielle: Wait, were you planning to observe the King while dressed in royal attire?
  • Gabrielle pulls out a servant's outfit from the bag.
  • Gabrielle: Please change into this, Your Majesty.

  • I get changed. Gabrielle checks my appearance, and then nods with satisfaction.
  • Gabrielle: Very good, Your Majesty. No one will be able to recognize you.
  • Gabrielle is going to station me outside Louis' study. We'll pretend that the Queen ordered it.
  • This way, I'll be able to observe what he does today.

  • We reach the door to the study. A servant is about to enter the study with a tray.
  • Gabrielle: I'll go lure her away, and you can take her place!
  • I duck my head to hide in a corner under the stairs. Gabrielle walks ahead, and the servant curtsies to her.
  • Gabrielle: I'm lost. Will you take me to the Queen's drawing room?
  • Maid: It would be my honor to do so. Please follow me, my lady.
  • Gabrielle gestures to me when the servant isn't looking.
  • The servant places the tray on the window sill, and then leaves with Gabrielle.
  • I check to make sure no one else is around. Then I pick up the tray, and stand outside the study.
  • Inside the study, Louis is discussing matters with Blaisdell. I can hear only muffled sounds through the heavy door.
  • You: (It's too soft. I can't tell what they're saying.)
  • I give up trying to eavesdrop, and start looking around me in boredom. My arms are starting to ache from holding the tray.
  • You: (This thing is too heavy. I should set it down first.)
  • I place the tray back on the window sill, and continue standing outside the study.

  • I guess I've been too tense lately. That's probably why I nodded off without realizing it.

  • ???: Time to wake up, sleeping beauty.
  • Someone is grasping me by the shoulders, and shaking me awake. I'm terribly annoyed.
  • You: (What insolence!)
  • I open my eyes and see Blaisdell's face. My mind is still groggy from sleep.
  • You: It's most ungentlemanly to disturb someone when they're sleeping, Monsieur Blaisdell!
  • His face takes on an unfathomable expression. He lets go of me, and steps back.
  • Blaisdell: You're right. That was rather ill-mannered of me. I wonder if you would be so kind as to give me a chance to apologize?
  • I suddenly recall that I'm supposed to be a servant, and I've been incredibly rude towards the King's trusted minister.
  • Nervously chewing on my lip, I bow my head apologetically.
  • You: I was in the wrong, and I beg your forgiveness for being so disrespectful. Is there anything I can do for you?
  • Blaisdell stares at me wordlessly.
  • I'm panicking on the inside, but I struggle to keep my face calm. I just want to get away as quickly as possible.
  • Blaisdell: I'd like to have some tea. I'm a little thirsty from the discussion with the King.
  • I frantically nod my head, and pick up the tray.
  • You: Yes, my lord. Please wait, I shall go brew some tea.
  • I turn away in relief. Blaisdell's intense gaze is stressful.
  • Blaisdell reaches out to block my way. He taps the tray with a finger.
  • Blaisdell: Wait, isn't that pot filled with tea?
  • The crystal pot is filled with a dark liquid. I decide to lie.
  • You: This... This has already gone cold. I'll go brew another pot.
  • Blaisdell withdraws his hand, and I guess I'm free to go. I walk away, but after several steps, I sense someone following me.
  • You: Are you going somewhere, my lord?
  • Blaisdell: If I remember correctly, there's an art gallery somewhere in Versailles. Am I right?
  • Blaisdell: I want to check that the collection is safe.
  • You: (Collection?)
  • You: I didn't hear any news about missing items. Is there a thief in Versailles?
  • Blaisdell nods sternly.
  • Blaisdell: I suspect that the statue of Freya has been stolen.
  • You: Impossible! There's no such statue in Versailles!
  • Blaisdell: Of course there is. Isn't it right here?
  • Blaisdell points at me. There's a mischievous look on his face.
  • I fly into a rage. Forgetting my disguise again, I slap his hand away.
  • You: Monsieur Blaisdell! I'm not someone you can mock! Don't talk to me like that.
  • You: Don't you know who I am?!
  • Blaisdell: Who are you?
  • You: I'm...
  • I remember I'm supposed to be a servant.
  • If the nobles hear of this, the ladies will laugh at me again.
  • Blaisdell: Oh, I know!
  • Blaisdell looks like he's just had an astounding realization. His attitude changes.
  • Blaisdell: You must be the Queen--
  • An alarm bell sounds in my head. I back away hurriedly, ready to flee.
  • You: (Oh no! I behaved terribly! No servant would ever act like this!)
  • You: (I should run. If there's any gossip, I'll just have to deny the rumors.)
  • Blaisdell: I mean, you're the Queen's servant, right?
  • I come to a sudden stop, and lift my head to look at Blaisdell's face. I think he must be teasing me deliberately.
  • Blaisdell: But why would the Queen's servant be waiting outside the King's study?
  • I lower my head and keep quiet. I've decided to ignore him.
  • Blaisdell: Oh, I get it. The Queen wants to see the King. Am I right?
  • You: Yes, that's right. May I go see the King now?
  • You: I haven't finished carrying out the Queen's orders.
  • Blaisdell: The Queen has never been so concerned about the King before.
  • Blaisdell: Did she hear something that's making her suspect the King's had a change of heart?
  • Blaisdell has hit the nail on the head. I can only quell my anger. This man is such a busybody.
  • Blaisdell: I just hope the Queen can take it in her stride. It's pretty normal for a King to have a mistress. The previous Kings were the same...
  • You: Enough!
  • I interrupt him, and curtsy stiffly.
  • You: You just said you're thirsty, my lord. Perhaps you should stop talking now.
  • You: I'll go brew you some tea. Please wait.
  • This time, Blaisdell doesn't follow me. I manage to leave Louis' study behind.
  • Blaisdell's words are infuriating, but I know he's right.
  • You: (And that makes me even angrier!)
  • I brew the tea in a rage, and when I return to the corridor, I notice that Blaisdell is gone.
  • You: (Is he discussing matters with the King again? At least I don't have to struggle to keep up the pretense.)
  • I carefully crack open the door to the study, and peer inside. There's no one in the study.
  • You: (Louis isn't in the study? Oh no, our plan is going to fail!)
  • You: (I must tell Gabrielle the news!)
