Resumen

O'TOOLE, Rachel Sarah. Don Carlos Chimo of Peru: Commoner or Cacique?. Secuencia [online]. 2011, n.81, pp.11-41. ISSN 2395-8464.

Following the judicial and notarial tracks left in the mid 17th century by an indigenous man who called himself Carlos Chimo, from his confrontations with the colonial authorities on the north coast of Peru until his defiant presentation at the Spanish royal court, this article explores the ways in which Andean leaders confirmed múltiple identities and in the process, revealed the ambiguous position of indigenous vassals in the Spanish kingdoms. Through the exploration of the circumstances that led to the petition of Chimo in his capacity as indigenous cacique and the reasons put forward to accuse him of being an impostor, this article seeks to understand the ways in which indigenous subjects broke away from the rhetoric of vassalage on both sides of the Atlantic.

Palabras llave : Indigenous; identity; vassalage; Andean; leadership; legality.
