Τα τελευταία χρόνια εμφανίσθηκε σε Διεθνές επίπεδο μια νέα επιστήμη, η Υπολογιστική Επιστήμη, η οποία είναι ένα ταχέως αναπτυσσόμενο διεπιστημονικό πεδίο που χρησιμοποιεί προηγμένες υπολογιστικές δυνατότητες για την κατανόηση και επίλυση σύνθετων προβλημάτων, και περιέχει έναν συγκεκριμένο τρόπο σκέψης που ονομάζεται «υπολογιστικός τρόπος σκέψης» (computational thinking). Αντικείμενο της παρούσας εργασίας είναι η αποσαφήνιση των όρων «Υπολογιστική Επιστήμη» και «Υπολογιστική Σκέψη» και πως έχουν επηρεάσει το μάθημα της Πληροφορικής στην Πρωτοβάθμια και Δευτεροβάθμια Εκπαίδευση. Επίσης γίνεται αναφορά στην ανάπτυξη της υπολογιστικής σκέψης με τη χρήση Εκπαιδευτικής Ρομποτικής. Σκοπός της εργασίας είναι η ενημέρωση της Ελληνικής εκπαιδευτικής κοινότητας για την νέα αυτή επιστήμη και τον υπολογιστικό τρόπο σκέψης και η τροφοδότηση σχετικών συζητήσεων.

Natural Language Processing is a programmed approach to analyze text that is based on both a set of theories and a set of technologies. This forum aims to bring together researchers who have designed and build software that will analyze, understand, and generate languages that humans use naturally to address computers.

Modern medical diagnosis relies on precise pain assessment tools in translating clinical information from patient to physician. The McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ) is a clinical pain assessment technique that utilizes 78 adjectives of different intensities in 20 categories to quantify a patient's pain. The questionnaire's efficacy depends on a predictable pattern of adjective use by patients experiencing pain. In this study, I recreate the MPQ's adjective intensity orderings using data gathered from patient forums and modern NLP techniques. I extract adjective intensity relationships by searching for key linguistic contexts, and then combine the relationship information to form robust adjective scales. Of 17 adjective relationships predicted by this research, only 4 diverge from the MPQ's orderings, which is statistically significant at the 0.1 alpha level. The results suggest predictable patterns of adjective use by people experiencing pain, but call into question the MPQ's categories for grouping adjectives.

Despite the tremendous advancements in computing-computer hardware, algorithm techniques, and software, there exist numerous real-world problems in a variety of areas which are overwhelmingly difficult to understand and develop optimal solutions using the conventional CS/IT techniques and traditional software methods. A new multidisciplinary area termed Computational Science which draws upon and integrates techniques from mathematics, numerical methods, computer science, simulation, statistical methods, data science, data visualization, etc. is emerging that facilitates the understanding of complex problems, and provides tools and frameworks to solve complex real-world problems. Recognizing the need to satisfy the demand for workforce trained in elements of computational science, a several higher education institutions are offering courses, certifications, and programs related to Computational Science or Computational Science and Engineering. This paper presents an overview of computational science as a discipline, an overview of a course in computational science that we have developed, and highlights of the relevancy and benefits of computational science course(s) and program(s).

2022) will provide an excellent international forum for sharing knowledge and results in theory,
methodology and applications of Control Engineering, Modelling, Computing and Applications.
The goal of this Conference is to bring together researchers and practitioners from academia and
industry to focus on understanding Modern Control Engineering, Modelling and Computing
concepts and establishing new collaborations in these areas.

A strategy for adaptive control and energetic optimization of aerobic fermentors was implemented, with both air flow and agitation speed as manipulated variables. This strategy is separable in its components: control, optimization, estimation. We optimized parameter’s estimation (from the usual KLa correlation) using sinusoidal excitation of air flow and agitation speed. We have implemented parameter’s estimation trough recursive least squares algorithm with forgetting factor. We carried separate essays on control, optimization and estimation algorithms. We carried our essays using an original computational simulation environment, with noise and delay generating facilities for data sampling and filtering.

Our results show the convergence and robustness of the estimation algorithm used, improved with use of both forgetting factor and KLa dead-band facilities. Control algorithm used in our work compares favorably with PID using the integrated area criteria for deviation between oxygen molarity and critical molarity (set point). Optimization algorithm clearly reduces energetic consumption, respecting critical molarity. Integration of control, optimization and adaptive algorithms was implemented, but future work is needed for stability. Methods were defined and implemented for stability improvement. We have implemented data acquisition and computer manipulation of air flow and agitation speed for actual fermentors.

Computational aspects increasingly shape environmental sciences. Actually, transdisciplinary modelling of complex and uncertain environmental systems is challenging computational science (CS) and also the science-policy interface. Large spatial-scale problems falling within this category - i.e. wide-scale transdisciplinary modelling for environment (WSTMe) - often deal with factors (a) for which deep-uncertainty may prevent usual statistical analysis of modelled quantities and need different ways for providing policy-making with science-based support. Here, practical recommendations are proposed for tempering a peculiar - not infrequently underestimated - source of uncertainty. Software errors in complex WSTMe may subtly affect the outcomes with possible consequences even on collective environmental decision-making. Semantic transparency in CS and free software are discussed as possible mitigations. [...]

The surface photoelectron and inner shell electron spectroscopy (SURPRISES) program suite performs ab initio calculations of photoionization and non-radiative decay spectra in nanoclusters and solid state systems by using a space-energy similarity procedure to reproduce the band-like part of the spectra. This approach provides an extension of Fano resonant multichannel scattering theory dealing with the complexity arising from condensed matter calculations at a computational cost comparable to that of molecules. The bottleneck of electron spectroscopy ab initio calculations in condensed matter is the size of the Hilbert space where the wavefunctions are expanded and the increase in number of final decay states in comparison to that of atoms and molecules. In particular, the diagonalization of the interchannel interaction to take into account the correlation between the double ion and the escaping electron is impracticable when hole delocalization on valence bands and electronic excitations are included in the model. To overcome this problem SURPRISES uses a 'space-energy similarity' approach, which allows the spreading of the Auger probability over the bands without tuning semi-empirical parameters. Furthermore, a completely new feature in the landscape of ab initio resonant decay processes calculations is represented by including energy loss through a statistical approach. Using the calculated lineshape as electron source, a Monte Carlo routine simulates the effect of inelastic losses on the original lineshape. In this process, the computed spectrum can be directly compared with acquired experimental spectra, thus avoiding background subtraction, a procedure not free from uncertainty. The program can exploit the symmetry of the system under investigation to reduce the calculation scaling and may compute photoemission and Auger decay angular distribution patterns including energy loss for the electrons emitted in resonance-affected photoionization processes. In this paper, we present general methods, computational techniques and a number of numerical tests applied to the calculation of Si K-LL and O K-LL Auger spectra from different SiO2 nanoclusters.

Canadian companies have been struggling with the Bill 198 (CSOX) compliance. The main problem is the lack of clear guidelines and the non-existence of a specific compliance process the IT staff could use to achieve the IT control objectives of the Bill 198. This research paper demonstrates a possibility of creating a new comprehensive framework to accomplish the compliance goal by aligning three existing effective frameworks COBIT 4.1, ITIL v3, and the ISO/IEC 27002 standard. It is shown in the paper, that relative to the current CSOX compliance practices, the new framework provides for higher efficiency and reduction of resources needed to comply with the Bill.
