Even The Bad Times Are Good | Tremeloes |
"It's little short of sensational!" raved a 1967 Tony Blackburn-soundalike reviewer. Time Seller was the first release for the new post-Steve and Muff Winwood line-up of the Spencer Davis Group. Their replacements were organist Eddie Hardin and guitarist Phil Sawyer. Apparently one band audition reject had been a pre-Elton Reg Dwight – who presumably went away and practised a lot. A complete departure from the band's previous, bluesy style, Time Seller ventures into trendy psychedelia and like the current Nirvana release, featured a strong cello-and-strings backing. The band recorded a promo for the single - presumably for the cinema - which falls into the 'so naff it's good' category. Literal attempts at depicting a time seller result in a plethora of clocks and watches and an embarrassed-looking Grim Reaper bedecked with cloak and scythe, bemusing passers-by in the park. The whole thing is mixed with home-grown attempts at psychedelic special effects. Definitely full marks for effort. In the Time Seller film promo, the lyric 'When it rains, it rains lemonade' is illustrated by some of R White's finest being tipped onto a brolly The single only reached #30 in the UK Nationals and #100 in the US Hot Hundred, but fared well in the Netherlands where it made the Top Ten. Tiny Goddess was the first single released on Chris Blackwell's Island label by Nirvana – Patrick Campbell-Lyons (right of photo) and Alex Spyropoulos. In our opinion, it should have been a huge hit, but with the majority of the offshore stations soon to cease broadcasting, it was not to be. In a full-page feature, Patrick Campbell-Lyons talks to Radio London about this 'happening' time, offshore radio and his book Psychedelic Days. |
