Not Our Mothers' Feminism

Marla Braverman

Has the "glass ceiling" been shattered? Judging by recent headlines on both sides of the Atlantic, the answer would seem to be a resounding "yes." First there was Hillary Clinton's near-miss candidacy for the Democratic nomination, followed by John McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate. Then, in Israel, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni eked out a narrow victory in her party's primaries. Whatever we may think of these particular women, their ideologies, and their managerial styles, there is no doubt that their meteoric rise to the top of their respective political hierarchies is an encouraging sign for proponents of women's rights everywhere. But as a recent string of high-profile sexual harassment and rape cases in Israel makes clear, the obstacles in women's path to equality still exist. And frequently, it is the feminists themselves who put them there.
