Canada’s response to the crisis in Sudan

The security situation in Sudan has been very dangerous since fighting broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces on April 15, 2023.

Immigration measures in response to the crisis in Sudan
We’ve put in place temporary measures for those affected by the conflict. There are temporary measures in place for:
- Sudanese nationals in Canada who want to extend their temporary resident status or apply for another temporary resident document
- extended family members of Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada who wish to reunite with their family in Canada permanently
- family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada who have fled Sudan

Information for Canadians and permanent residents who want to leave Sudan
Evacuation flights have ended.
Canadians and permanent residents and their families who need help should contact the Emergency Watch and Response Centre. Canadian assistance for Canadian permanent residents may be limited.
We urge all Canadians in Sudan to sign up for the Government of Canada’s Registration of Canadians Abroad service, so that we can provide them with direct updates.
Commercial onward options may be available to leave Sudan via Port Sudan. However, be aware that all overland travel is extremely hazardous.

How Canada is helping
Canada is working closely with the international community and regional partners to support a peaceful resolution of the conflict. Canada calls for the resumption of dialogue towards the formation of a civilian-led transitional government. Canada urges both parties to respect any ceasefire and engage in mediation efforts supported by regional partners that promote dialogue and peace.
Canada provides international assistance in Sudan, including humanitarian assistance to meet the lifesaving needs of crisis-affected populations. This includes funding for emergency food and nutrition assistance, clean water, hygiene, sanitation, health and protection services. Canada will continue working with its humanitarian partners to support their efforts to address the needs of vulnerable people affected by violence and insecurity across the country, as the context allows.
