A pleasure to welcome delegates from the 2024 Mine Water Energy Symposium, and colleagues from IEA Geothermal and The Coal Authority, for a tour our UK Geoenergy Observatories facility in Glasgow today. The Glasgow Observatory is a research facility designed for investigating shallow, low-temperature, mine-water heat energy and potential heat storage resources. The observatory site is typical of towns and cities with a post-industrial urban and coalfield legacy. Towns and cities are where the greatest demand for decarbonising heat lies. 📅 UK Geoenergy Observatories Open Days Interested in mine-water geothermal energy? BGS are providing guided tours of our Glasgow facility on selected dates. The tour will include an overview of mine water thermal energy and an opportunity to see the infrastructure required to abstract the heat from the mine -water including heat exchangers and boreholes. The tour is suitable for anyone who has an interest in learning more about mine-water geothermal energy but there will also be ample opportunity for researchers from industry or academia to discuss specific areas of interest in more depth. https://lnkd.in/gtZw7jBy #UKGeoenergy #MineWaterEnergy #Geothermal #GeothermalEnergy #Decarbonisation #EnergyTransition

Delighted to be at Dynamic Earth today for the first in-person Mine Water Energy Symposium. The event, run in partnership between BGS, The Coal Authority, IEA Geothermal and Department for Energy Security and Net Zero is into it's 4th year. As part of the IEA geothermal technology collaboration programme (TCP), the symposium brings together international participants to share case studies of mine water heating projects as well as developments in mine thermal energy storage. #MineWaterEnergy2024 #GeothermalEnergy #Geothermal

BGS has released the first digital version of the UK legacy geothermal catalogue of subsurface temperature measurements, rock thermal conductivity measurements and heat flow calculations. The aim is to make a significant dataset more accessible, to support the development of geothermal energy and heat decarbonisation onshore UK. It may be used to inform pre-feasibility stages of projects or for research and innovation.
