For many people the greatest F1 car in history, in 1988 the McLaren MP4/4 driven by Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna won an absurd 15 out of 16 races, achieving an unprecedented level of dominance that remains unmatched. A technical marvel from Gordon Murray and Steve Nichols, the MP4/4 combined engineering excellence, unseen aerodynamic intuition and the ever reliable Honda V6 engine into the fastest car on the grid- which incredibly only saw a single retirement due to technical issues. Finishing the season with double-digit 1-2 finishes, the only thing that could stop McLaren Racing supremacy was the emerging rivalry within their ranks. Domination in F1 can be dull, but with Prost and Senna displaying the MP4/4’s full potential it was anything but. The McLaren MP4/4 is the 7th car we’re presenting in our 100 Year Celebrations. Damien Smith presents its case as Motor Sport’s Race Car of the Century in association with Richard Mille. It was the 4th of June, and the third race of the 1967 Formula One season was about to commence. The spectators at Zandvoort knew they were in for a great day out, with manufacturers including Brabham Group Limited and Scuderia Ferrari debuting new cars, however neither came close to the challenging the victor. Jim Clark sailed to the finish line, in a Lotus he had only seen days prior in practice. Clark introduced the world to the Lotus 49, a revolution on wheels equipped with Cosworth 3-litre V8 engines. In the Lotus 49’s debut season it took four victories, every pole position it contested and won both 68’ titles- yet on paper these performances still don’t do the car justice. With engineering responsible for an absurd 155 grand prix victories, the Lotus 49 is deservedly the 5th car we’re highlighting in our 100 Year Celebrating Gordon Cruickshank presents its case as Motor Sport’s Race Car of the Century in association with Richard Mille. Throughout the 1950s Space Age design displayed the anticipation and confidence in technology that much of society felt. The future was rapidly becoming the present with Russia launching Sputnik, the United States forming NASA and a British Cat releasing the Jaguar UK D-type. The 4th car we’re highlighting in our 100 Year Celebrations, the D-Type, became a British Icon combining performance and Jaguar’s signature profile. Comparable to the Beatles first hit ‘From Me to You’ and the debut of the Apple 1 Computer, 1948 saw the release of the Ferrari 166 which put the Italian outfit on the map. Primarily designed as road car, the 166 combined fashion and function with spectacular victories in both the Mille Miglia and 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Ferrari 166 is subsequently our pick for the greatest car of the 1940s, with Damien Smith presenting its case as a strong contender for the title of Race Car of the Century, in association with Richard Mille.
