📣NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK 2024 THEME ANNOUNCED📣 There have been many moments in Australia’s reconciliation journey that make us want to turn away. But when things are divisive, the worst thing we can do is disengage or disconnect. National Reconciliation Week’s theme for 2024, Now More Than Ever, is a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will – and must – continue. Now more than ever, we need to tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation. We know that the 6.2 million Australians who voted YES are committed to better outcomes for First Nations people and are with us. It is imperative that supporters of reconciliation stand up to defend and uphold the rights of First Nations peoples. To call out racism wherever we encounter it, and to actively reinforce the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across this continent. Now more than ever, the work continues. In treaty making, in truth-telling, in understanding our history, in education, and in tackling racism. We need connection. We need respect. We need action. And we need change. Now more than ever, we need reconciliation. https://lnkd.in/gS3tYRY #NRW2024 #NowMoreThanEver #Reconciliation

This week, in a ceremony held in the Wren Library at Trinity College Cambridge, four spears taken by James Cook and Joseph Banks on 29 April 1770 were permanently repatriated to the La Perouse Aboriginal Community. "They are an important connection to our past, our traditions, and cultural practices, and to our ancestors. Our Elders have worked for many years to see their ownership transferred to the traditional owners of Botany Bay. Many of the families within the La Perouse Aboriginal Community are descended from those who were present during the eight days the Endeavour was anchored in Kamay in 1770." - Noeleen Timbery, La Perouse Local Aboriginal Land Council. Today we pay respect and honour First Nations men and women who have served and continue to serve in Australia’s armed forces. First Nations peoples have always fought for Country. During World War I, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples were legally excluded from serving in our armed forces. However, more than 1000 First Nations people lied about their identities and enlisted. We remember the sacrifices made. We acknowledge the discrimination, prejudice and exclusion they returned home to after serving Country. Take the time today to learn more about First Nations military service. 📍Our Mob Served: https://bit.ly/4d8YkxY 📍First Nations service from the Boer War to now: https://bit.ly/3w8zDB8 📍Learn the stories of First Nations servicemen during WWI: https://bit.ly/3QgBjPK 📍DeadlyStory: Aboriginal Service People: https://bit.ly/440Qylp 📍Learn about the Frontier Wars: https://bit.ly/3Ad8R8X #Reconciliation #ANZACDay #ANZACs

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples highlight truth-telling as a much-needed step toward recognition and reconciliation. But new research highlights uncertainty among non-Indigenous Australians about truth-telling, how it is conducted, and how to participate. The report, Coming to terms with the past? Identifying barriers and enablers to truth-telling, undertaken by UNSW Arts, Design & Architecture researchers on behalf of Reconciliation Australia explores attitudes towards, barriers to and enablers of truth-telling in Australia. Recently launched, it finds significant gaps in the understanding of truth-telling between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-Indigenous Australians. It also highlights the need to carefully consider the aims of community truth-telling initiatives, establish protocols for safe and inclusive events, and build truth-telling and truth-listening capacity among participants. 📌Learn more via The Conversation Australia + NZ: https://bit.ly/3Qa1Kqu 📌Statement from researchers & Reconciliation Australia: https://bit.ly/447rnxY 📌Read the full report: https://bit.ly/3vWN86R #Reconciliation #TruthTelling #UNSW

Day 3 of the Australian Reconciliation Network (ARN) Meeting, in Naarm. ARN Leaders visited the Yoorrook Justice Commission to hear the formal Truth-Telling process firsthand; and had the great privilege of listening to a powerful submission presented by the First Peoples' Assembly of Victoria Co-Chairs, Ngarra Murray and Rueben Berg. The submission was part of Yoorrook’s land, sky, and waters hearings and all ARN members were deeply moved by the stories shared; and inspired by the important work being undertaken by the Commission. Reconciliation Victoria extends our deepest respect and gratitude to the Yoorrook Commissioners and their leadership team for inviting the ARN to be part of this public hearing. We encourage all Victorians to follow and support Yoorrook’s work to advance Truth-Telling and inform all Victorians of the facts and impact of our true history. You can watch a live stream of the hearings here - https://lnkd.in/gMgjir5y Thank you also to Colin Hunter Junior for the warm Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony.
