University of East London withdraws doctorate awarded in 2007, and Liverpool Hope University may follow suit

Rolf Harris has been stripped of his honorary doctorate by the University of East London after his convictions for indecent assault on Monday, and he could also lose his honours from Liverpool Hope University.

The University of East London's governing board voted unanimously to withdraw the doctorate. Dusty Amroliwala, the university's deputy vice-chancellor, said: "The university has communicated this decision to Mr Harris' legal representatives. We would like to extend our sympathies to all those who may have been victims of Mr Harris' wrongful actions."

The university made the award to Harris in 2007 for his contribution to the arts and culture. He told the graduates: "Make sure you look at every person in the audience or the classroom. Unless you have the courage and confidence to meet everyone's eyes, you will never reach your potential. You have to let them know that you are aware of what they are doing."

Liverpool Hope University granted Harris a doctorate of letters in 2010 for his contribution to art and music education. A spokeswoman said: "The university notes the decision of the courts, and pending any appeals will consider its position in due course."

Moves are already believed to be under way to strip Harris of his CBE and his Order of Australia honours. In Australia, the recording industry association has ejected him from its musical hall of fame, and the mayor of Perth indicated that a plaque in his honour is likely to be removed.

Harris was convicted of 12 indecent assaults on four young women and girls as young as seven or eight at Southwark crown court on Monday. He will be sentenced on Friday.
