landmass[edit]

Originally proposed at Wikidata:Property proposal/Place

Done: no label (P5130) (Talk and documentation)
Description area of land where the element is situated
Represents landmass (Q205895)
Data type Item
Domain geographical feature (Q618123) outside of water
Example
See also continent (P30), part of (P361), located in/on physical feature (P706)

Motivation

After the creation of located in protected area (P3018), mountain range (P4552), drainage basin (P4614), geomorphological unit (P4688) and others, located in/on physical feature (P706) is slowly losing its raison d'être as a catch-all solution to locating a geographical feature (Q618123). It seems to me that the last simple property needed to eventually sort the mess it has helped establish would be a 'landmass' one. It would basically say which landmass a feature is on from a purely geographical point of view, leaving continent (P30), which by the way only allows a very limited number of values, for more geopolitical connections. It would be particularly helpful for things – mountains, rivers and whatever else – located on islands and this is why I suggest an 'island' alias in the English language. It would systematically replace part of (P361), currently sometimes used to store this kind of relation. Thierry Caro (talk) 21:42, 21 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

Support This makes sense, though I am sure located in/on physical feature (P706) still will be useful for other cases? ArthurPSmith (talk) 13:40, 23 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Support I supose it would b use full to put thing like Mount Royal (Q1757764) --> Island of Montreal (Q292354). --Fralambert (talk) 02:45, 25 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
