Biography

Tina Turner was an American singer and actor, widely referred to as the "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll".[1]

Anna Mae Bullock was born in Tennessee in 1939, the daughter of Floyd Richard Bullock and Zelma (Currie) Bullock Mimms.[2]

Tina Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock on Nov 26, 1939, in the rural Tennessee community of Nutbush, which she lyrically described in her 1973 song Nutbush City Limits as a "quiet little old community, a one-horse town."

Her father worked as an overseer on a farm and her mother left the family when the singer was 11 years old, according to the singer’s 2018 memoir, My Love Story. As a teenager, she moved to St Louis to rejoin her mom.

Ike Turner, whose 1951 song Rocket 88 has often been called the first rock and roll record, discovered Anna at age 17 when she grabbed the mic to sing at his club show in St Louis in 1957.

The band leader later recorded a hit song, A Fool In Love, with his protege and gave her the stage name Tina Turner, before the two married in Tijuana, Mexico.

Turner left her husband one night in 1976 on a tour stop in Dallas, after he pummeled her during a car ride and she struck back, according to her memoir. Their divorce was finalized in 1978.

She and Ike Turner raised four sons:[3][4]

  1. Ike Junior Turner (born 1958), who was a child from Ike's prior relationship with Lorraine Taylor (1933-2019), who was adopted by Tina Turner, as was his brother, Michael Turner
  2. Craig Raymond Hill Turner (1958-2018), the son of Raymond Earl Hill (abt.1933-1996), whom Anna never married[5]
  3. Michael Turner (born 1960), brother of Ike Turner Jr, also adopted by Tina Turner
  4. Ronolde Ronnie Turner (1960-2022), Tina's son with her husband Ike Turner[6]

Life with Erwin Bach

In 1985, Turner met German music executive Erwin Bach who became her long-term partner. In 1988 she moved to London, beginning a decades-long residency in Europe, and then to Switzerland about 1993.[9]

In 2013, she and Bach married in Kuesnacht, Zurich, Switzerland in a civil ceremony, relinquishing her American citizenship and becoming a citizen of Switzerland the same year that she married Bach.[9]

She battled a number of health problems after retiring and in 2018 she faced a family tragedy, when her oldest son, Craig, took his life at age 59 in Los Angeles. Her younger son Ronnie died in December 2022.

She is survived by Bach and two sons of Ike’s that she adopted.

Research Notes

Her former spouse, Ike Turner, claims that Martha Nell Bullock was her original name, but no records have emerged to confirm this.
