Doing some math following the layoffs at Tesla
r/musked

musked (verb; past tense and past particple of musk): To have been skillfully deceived, hoodwinked, or bamboozled by an individual who wields immense wealth and spins extravagant tales that ultimately prove empty.

Doing some math following the layoffs at Tesla

Elmo "needs" $56B in stock rekindle the work ethic he lost after blowing his prior load on Twitter. Recently I also heard that Tesla's total headcount for layoffs may now be approaching 20k. So let's crunch the numbers. First, we need an assumption as to how much an employee costs annually. With stock grants, assuming mostly white-collar jobs, building in some assumptions about future pay raises, costs of insurance benefits, payroll taxes, etc., we can start with what seems an unrealistically high number like 200k. Now we can do math to find out how long it takes 20k people earning 200k annually in benefits to absorb 56B in costs:

56B = 56,000,000,000 (that's a lot of zeros!)

56B / (20k people x 200k/year) = 14 years

There you have it: Elmo's part-time contributions are equal to the efforts of 20k people working fulltime for 14 years.

Or, we can look at Ford Motor Company whose stock has a total market cap of about 49B and could presumably be purchased for 56B. By Elmo's logic, his greatness has a monetary value which exceeds all the holdings of an established American auto manufacturer, complete with engineers who know how to design trucks that don't: randomly lose panels, rust on day 1, force wide-open throttle events, catastrophically fail after going through a carwash, etc.

Or, Tesla could put some of that 56B towards building its own factories, or R&D towards better battery chemistry, investing in new capital equipment, etc.

So if you're a stock holder, keep stuff like this in mind when it comes time to vote on his comp package.

Tesla Service is unbearable

Incredibly frustrated with Service. The rear inverter on my M3LR had an a126 error a month ago. The car was in the shop for more than 3 weeks because they first received a faulty part from the factory, then received the wrong part two times (found out later)! I got it back for like three days and the SAME error came back again. Took it in, they said "oh maybe its the coolant, we'll change it, takes 3 hours". Now three DAYS later still waiting on an update.

I'm moving away, need to see family in another country, and had multiple trips cancelled because of this. I love this car and always wanted a Tesla but damn, get your service together.

2 years with Tesla Solar

I installed a 4.25 kW Solar Panel system + 1 Powerwall back in November of 2021. The system was estimated to produce 6,481 kWh /yr, and has so far performed better than estimated. In 2022 it generated 7040.8 kWh and in 2023 it generated 7014.6 kwH, so about 7.5-8% better than estimated.

Overall it's been a great experience, I have washed the panels off (with just water and a hose) maybe twice, but it has been a work-horse. I'm located in California, in Sacramento County, and the power goes out ALL the time.

I did have some issues with licks flickering, but after sending in a service ticket, they resolved it a few weeks later. Just figured I'd share my experience and happy to help answer any questions as well!
