The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Force was raised on 24 October, 1962. At present, the ITBP guards 3,488 km long India-China borders ranging from the Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Jachep La in Arunachal Pradesh. Apart from this, the Force also has important roles in many internal security duties and operations against the Left Wing Extremism in the state of Chhattisgarh.
Most of the ITBP’s Border Out Posts (BOPs) are located at altitudes ranging from 9,000 ft to 18,800 ft where temperatures drop to minus 45 degrees Celsius in extreme winters.
ITBP is a specialized Armed Police Force of the Nation which trains its personnel in various disciplines including mountaineering and skiing apart from intensive tactical training, thereby creating a distinctive image of the Force.
ITBP also conducts relief and rescue operations as 'First Responders' for natural calamities in the Himalayan region. The Force has responded in hundreds of search, rescue & relief operations over the years to provide succour to thousands of citizens in distress due to various calamities.
The Force has a glorious history of the past 6 decades in which the jawans of the ITBP have made many sacrifices in the line of duty and in the service of the Nation.

भारत तिब्बत सीमा पुलिस (आईटीबीपी) बल की स्थापना 24 अक्टूबर, 1962 को हुई थी। वर्तमान में आईटीबीपी लद्दाख में काराकोरम दर्रे से अरुणाचल प्रदेश में जाचेप ला तक 3,488 किमी. लंबी भारत-चीन सीमा की सुरक्षा के लिए तैनात है। इसके अलावा बल कई आंतरिक सुरक्षा कर्तव्यों एवं छत्तीसगढ में वामपंथ उग्रवाद के विरूद्ध अभियानों में भी महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभा रहा है।
बल की अधिकांश सीमा चौकियां 9,000 फीट से 18,800 फीट तक की ऊंचाइयों पर स्थित हैं जहां तापमान शून्य से 45 डिग्री सेल्शियस तक नीचे चला जाता है।
आईटीबीपी राष्ट्र का एक विशेष सशस्त्र पुलिस बल है जो अपने जवानों को गहन सामरिक प्रशिक्षण के अलावा पर्वतारोहण और स्कीइंग समेत अन्य कई विधाओं में प्रशिक्षित करता है जिससे बल की एक विशिष्ट छवि है।
आईटीबीपी हिमालय क्षेत्र में प्राकृतिक आपदाओं के लिए 'फर्स्ट रेस्पोंडर' के रूप में राहत व बचाव अभियानों का संचालन भी करती है। इसने गत वर्षों में सैकड़ों खोज, बचाव व राहत अभियान संचालित किए हैं और हजारों नागरिकों को बचाया गया है तथा विभिन्न आपदाओं में मदद पहुंचाई है।
बल का पिछले 6 दशकों का स्वर्णिम इतिहास रहा है जिस दौरान बल के जवानों ने विभिन्न सुरक्षा दायित्वों में अनेकों बलिदान दिए हैं।

Shri Rahul Rasgotra, Director General, Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) was born in the year 1965 in Mumbai. He did his BA (Hons) in Economics from Hindu College, University of Delhi and MA in Economics from Delhi School of Economics. He also holds a M Phil degree earned during the National Defence College Course in 2016. He is a 1989 batch IPS officer of the Manipur cadre.
He has served for many years in the Intelligence Bureau in various capacities in J&K and Chhattisgarh. He has also headed the Multi-Agency Centre (MAC) established in the wake of the Kargil conflict for counter-terrorism co-operation across all agencies in India.
He has also served abroad under the Ministry of External Affairs in Indian Missions at Islamabad and Washington principally for co-operation in counter-terrorism. Shri Rasgotra has been decorated with the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service, Police Medal for Meritorious Service and Asadharan Aasuchna Kushalta Padak.

श्री राहुल रसगोत्रा, महानिदेशक, भारत-तिब्बत सीमा पुलिस (आईटीबीपी) का जन्म वर्ष 1965 में मुंबई में हुआ तथा इन्होंने दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय के हिंदू कॉलेज से अर्थशास्त्र में बीए(ऑनर्स) और दिल्ली स्कूल ऑफ इकोनॉमिक्स से अर्थशास्त्र में एमए किया है। साथ ही, इन्होंने नेशनल डिफेंस कॉलेज से कोर्स करने के दौरान वर्ष-2016 में एम.फिल. भी किया है। ये मणिपुर काडर के 1989 बैच के भारतीय पुलिस सेवा के अधिकारी हैं।
इन्होंने जम्मू-कश्मीर और छत्तीसगढ़ में तैनात रहते हुए, आसूचना ब्यूरो में अनेक वर्षों तक विभिन्न पदों पर सेवाऍं दी हैं तथा कारगिल संघर्ष के मद्देनजर भारत में सभी एजेंसियों के बीच आतंकवाद विरोधी सहयोग के लिए स्थापित मल्टी-एजेंसी सेंटर (एमएसी) का भी व्यावसायिक दक्षता से कुशल नेतृत्व किया है।
इन्होंने विदेश मंत्रालय के तहत इस्लामाबाद और वाशिंगटन में स्थित भारतीय मिशनों में मुख्य रूप से आतंकवाद-विरोधी सहयोग के लिए भी महत्त्वपूर्ण काम किया है। श्री रसगोत्रा को विशिष्ट सेवा के लिए राष्ट्रपति पुलिस पदक, सराहनीय सेवा के लिए पुलिस पदक और असाधारण आसूचना कुशलता पदक से अलंकृत किया गया है।
